Worker and Shopper questions

Hello all,

I have a few questions about workers and shoppers.  I am running a 3 city region on my own I have all three cities running one has made it all the way up to a population of about 115,000 peeps and is running fine.

I am working on building up another "tourist city" that has very little industry. It's population has gotten up to about 60,000.  The issues I am having are I am getting red zone warnings that there is a worker shortage + also not enough shoppers.  I have an airport + air ship + bus regional & local service the only thing I am lacking as far as transportation is ferry. There should be more then enough population in the region to support all three cities I thought workers commuted between cities for work and tourist stuff....

Also two other side notes I also in my tourist city getting warnings that there are not enough freight producers .... I remember reading someplace that your do not need industry to run a city if this is the case why am I getting warnings about freight?

Also last question what is the best "Great works" to do?

Thanks for your time and help

D

1. About workers and shoppers: they can commute but usually there is only one regional highway between your cities so your congestion can get so bad that they will never make it (and turn around as soon as they enter). It is always a good idea to have residential zones in every city.

2. As of around update 8, commercial zones require freight. Lack of freight really hurts profits so unless they have more than enough shoppers (which means a ton of tourists and residents for very little commerce), then they can go abandoned after a while.

3. You should probably check employment/unemployment figures in your game to truly make sure you have enough workers. High density industry hires many workers but produces a pathetic amount of freight.

4. Great works produce a lot a resource (arcology produces workers, shoppers, and supposedly students, airport brings in tourists and accepts freight [hint: you don't want to send your freight to an airport], solar farm produces a lot of electricity, space center generates tourists and increases tech level).

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

A follow up to my question about freight producers...... if I don't want anymore industrial zones can I use a trade depot to import freight? just wondering if that will work as well

For some weird reason, the people at Maxis chose not to allow the import or export of freight. Freight that goes to depots and ports just disappears and there is no way to get it back or to get it from somewhere else.

I've mentioned this in the mod request thread. The ability to import freight would be an excellent mod. Then we could build tourism and casino cities that don't need industry. I hope one of the talented modders here can find a way to do this. :)

The trade depot/port is basically a black hole for freight. If you have too much industry and they complain about not having anywhere to ship freight then the trade depot/port helps. The problem is most cities don't have enough freight, and the trade depot/port can't help you with that.

I'd love to see a mod that lets you import freight via a trade depot. Alternatively it might be possible to create a courier company warehouse mod that imports freight from the region (in other words makes it out of thin air) and delivers it to commercial. Goodbye industry, goodbye pollution! Hello more room in my city for other things! If I knew how to make 3D objects and I knew how to do mods that's what I'd be doing.
