What's In A City Name?

When I play SC2013, I have a tendency to if not change, then modify my city's name. I find the game's given names to cities to be silly. I like to at the least shorten the given name, i.e. "Contestanoga Crossing" to just "Contestanoga". I like to identify a city by just one name. It just seems to give it a personality. In real life, aren't most cities called by one name? Of course, you have the well-known ones that have more than one name, such as New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and such, but one just hits a personal note to me. What do some of you think?

In Bill Bryson's 1980's travel book "The Lost Continent" he says "small towns with names like 'spigot' or 'urinal'".  Because of this I used to always name my town that - since Simcity 1.  Of course with multiplayer 2013 I worry someone's going to report me for using "Urinal".

Sometimes I use the names I always use for my first few towns in Civilization: Dresbach (Capitol) Roga Bay (first city on an ocean) Last Gas (First on a desert).

Reently I've been calling my towns "Cheese Junction".

I name my cities accordingly.  When I start a region I may name them east (your city), west city, north city, and south city.   It makes it easier when switching between cities and comparing.   Because on the region view will show other region cities and using that system you know which ones are accessible to each other.   That works great when gifting to a sister city.   you are limited to the ones connected by the Highway and that is no more than three or four cities each.  Or even in the name use the resource such as Oilville,  Oreville, and Coalville to name a few..
