Notorious gangland figure succumbs to liver cancer this afternoon.

For those who don't know, Read was a notorious underground figure who played a significant role in the Gangland wars in Melbourne during the 80s and 90s.

I've never understood how we can turn a vicious thug into a minor celebrity.

 

I saw the movie 'Chopper' a few years ago, and on the face of it, it was quite entertaining.

 

But the flip side to that, is the peoples lives that he ruined through his actions. I'm sure that they wouldn't find it entertaining, or regard him as a 'legend'.

I believe he was also portrayed on the TV show Underbelly.

 

The fact that he didn't want a transplant when it could be given to someone else, shows that he can't be all bad.
