I have not done this yet buti was wondering....  if any body has tried this and sorry if this has already been talked about.  But my question is if all your city services are in place will a city run with out having to watch it? I want to let one of my cities run for say a few hours @ normal speed to build up some cash...  Any ideas on this?

I have done this without too much problem! The one thing that worries me about leaving it too run are the annoying disasters!! If traffic is not a problem and u r not growing the city I, personally, think this is ok! On the subject of disasters I have been running a new city into its 4th year with no disasters!

If you're going to do this, don't upgrade the roads in your industrial sector to high-density unless you have a HAZMAT section at your fire department.

i normally use this method when starting a new city. putting basic service in place, dont have more than medium density streets tho. run it on cheeta speed for apx 20min. then you are ready for the next investment.

I used to do this ALL the time to finish great works but you can't really do it anymore.  One of the updates (not sure which one) added a feature that makes your city pause itself after about a half hour with nothing happening.  This has been a mixed blessing, I no longer have to worry about coming back to a city with 500+ rubble but at the same time it means I have to babysit my computer to get great works finished.  I find this feature to be a nuisance.

I'm with you on the auto-pause.  I wonder if Maxis implementing it has something to do with leaderboard rankings?  Build a self sufficient electronic specialization city that produces $8-12M and let it run on its own for a few days, you know?  Not a hard thing to do and the auto-pause certainly prevents it now.

Yeah that is the one thing I have thought about was the disasters..... I could see coming back to it and everything be blown up LOL Disasters, don't get me started on that annoyance. Took a break for ~30 mins and come back to find a reactor at the nuclear plant melted down. To add insult to injury after bulldozing and rebuilding that one reactor they managed to melt it down a second time.

Short answer, you should be fine as long as you don't have any nuclear reactors that your sims could meltdown.

Must admit that I now play this game on Sandbox mode due to disasters and other rubbish that ruins the experience. There should be an On/Off button for the disasters so that we can enjoy the game without Zombies and other stuff.
