They give you an extra 500 students. If you are close to an upgrade but don't quite have enough students from residential, they work great, at a price of course.

They give you students? I thought it was existing students not having to travel and staying in them, also cutting down on traffic.

    Each Dorm holds 500 students.

You get 3, guaranting 1,500 students every day in your university.

That's the way I read it. That's also the way it worked for me.

I also believed that it increased the speed of Research Projects because the students could stay on campus, maybe I'm wrong though so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I believe that is correct, because the more students you have, the faster the research is completed.

I'm assuming they're not real clear on the wording here - after all dorms are "housing".  What they probably mean is "without having to zone more residential".

That's the way I read it. Dorms are housing for the University.

Dormitories allow you to add more students to your university (from both the region and the city) without having to up valuable space making new residential zones.

EDIT: Sorry this is pretty much the same as some of the above posts!

It gives the students a place to live instead of their current homes. This will help you greatly reduce traffic, since students won't have to commute to the university, they already live there. Each building does not magically create 500 new students out of thin air, they must already reside in your town, this just gives them a new place to live.

This is what I've seen, as well.  Perhaps not an extra 500 out of thin air, but helps push over the top for the upgrade.
