Manual Update Error

Attempting to update my game to version 1.1.638.0, playing on RushHour edition. Whenever I run the application for the update (found at https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?page=16), it works until it gets to the SimCity_1.dat and SimCity_2.dat files, at which point, I receive a message saying "Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match." It then proceeds to finish the update.

Basically, everything works except for those two files. After my attempts, I checked the file sizes as suggested on the page where I got it from, and unsurprisingly the 1.dat and 2.dat are the only ones not updated to the correct size.

Can't tell if this is some error or if it's something I'm either doing wrong or did wrong in the past. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Well, how did you load the original game?  If you got it off a torrent complete with a no-cd patch, you can never apply the updates.  We don't support illegally obtained games, and the patch routines don't either.

Bought it a couple of years ago. Legally. Was on a disk, don't remember where it was bought from, may have been online or in a real store. But I loaded it off a disk that came out of a box, nothing illegal about it. Any advice?

What version number is your current installation. You can find it by checking the properties of the game's exe file located in the Program Files/Maxis/SimCity 4 directory. It should be something like 1.1.610 or 1.1.613. I don't recall the specific error that may occur, but you might be trying the wrong SKU patch. Just a thought...

    Looks like 1.1.613.

The exe was in the "Apps" folder, which was inside the directory you mentioned. Took a bit of digging to find it. Would that have an impact on anything?

That's odd, because I live in the US and assumed I had used that version. Maybe if I had bought it online I wound up with the Euro version... thanks a lot for that, will try it. Just one question first - will I need to do anything about the fact that a few of the files were updated when I downloaded the 1.1.638 patch?

Yes, the game version is based on the game itself, not where a person resides. As the game has become more available through various sources, this has come up more often.

As for updating partially updated files, I don't remember what may happen. It seems to me that it should update okay - from others that have had to do the same. You might try it first. If it doesn't work, then the game may need to be re-installed.

Yep, that worked. Looks like it just replaced my old files, because the update went through without any errors.

Thanks again for your help. Thought I was gonna have to just give up on the updates, thought I'd try and here, and I've gotten in fixed in a matter of hours.
