Good Mods for Simcity 4?

I have been playing Simcity 4 for a very long time and now I am wanting to get started doing mods for the game. I have downloaded NAM 31.1 and I understand how to use it and it is a great addition to the game. The next thing I am looking to do is make my city look more realistic. I think Maxis did a good with this game, but I am really getting tired of looking at the same old residential, commercial. and industry buildings. I was wondering if someone could recommend a good file to download to get new residential, commercial, and industry buildings.

Also, I have seen these files in the STEX that are called texture packages and prop packages (or something close to that). Can someone explain to me what these are? I am new to this, so I would love any suggestions that anyone could give me!

Thanks!!!!

First of all, you should really download NAM 31.2, which was recently released, as it has a lot of important bug fixes to NAM 31.1.

The texture packs and prop packs are dependencies for other downloads.  When a download needs them, it will specify them.

As for good mods to start out with.... may I suggest this link?  The author actively keeps it updated, and it does seem to have good suggestions:

    Cougar2004,

Thanks for the post. The website was very helpful!

    Glad you liked those.

I would also highly recommend the NAM as others have above, and the Extra Cheats DLL, simply because it is better to have than not.  Never know when you want to see travel paths, know your terrain height, or feel ok about stealing some money for a city in the region from the mystical federal bank.

Additionally, you may like to try the SPAM from the same website (simpeg.com) which revitalizes your farming experience Or if you dont want a radical change, just the BSC Farms from the LEX (sc4devotion.com).  You may like to change the water to a different color and texture with a STEX water mod.  You may desire to drive missions a little faster with a UDI mod.  Be sure to grab ALL the original Maxis Landmarks if you feel so inclined to have the complete works available from Maxis.  You might like to add some different vehicles to your streets with a STEX download.  Or perhaps youd like to see more kinds of trees to place around your city.  There are even new ordinances you can add which replace original ones.  It is helpful to take a few minutes to study the search features of the STEX to help you find these types of items.

I listed a whole bunch of other things you can modify in SimCity 4 in this thread:  All you can Modify in SimCity 4 (Poll inside).

    Good luck~!

You definitely want the NAM and the SPAM. I was never happy with the Maxis farms and the ones that grow with the SPAM mod are really nice looking, much better than the Maxis farms.

You can get this mod and you can build cities on Mars!

If you look around the STEX you can find many martian add ons.

If you go with SPAM (which I would also recommend), don't be afraid to add some of the BCS Farm Fields (just make sure it's compatible), and Simgoober's Farm Fields to really mix it up. Again, just read all of the descriptions to make sure they are compatible with SPAM. There are a bunch that are definitely compatible. There is a good mixture of all 3 in my rural areas ATM.

All good things.  However, there is no rush, so take it slowly.  Nothing worse than having to find a plugin incompatibility.  They don't all dance together.  If you are going to use SimMars, a recommend starting a separate account for it.
