Anyone care to share a link to that mod? Or any you could recommend. Default cotton-balls maxis trees are so ughhh!

That City Journal does appear to be using the SFBT Tree Replacement Mod, which replaces the default Maxis trees with custom ones.

You'll have to register and login at the BSC LEX to download it.

 

Note: The listed prop packs (dependencies) have been replaced by this one, which is an updated version -- ignore the ones in the description.

Simply place this in your documents plugins folder, in addition to the actual mod.

On the other hand, I prefer a pine forest base, but have lots of MM trees of various stripes to use as needed.  Jeronij at SC4Devotion has some nice tree sets, and there are others around.  I use the PEG pine forest mod as a base, and hand lay my other plots of trees.

 

Have a care not to lay down too many trees.  Each of them is an object and count in the simulation.
