Can the NAM affect airport capacity?

Basically I still use the original Maxis airports (feel like the only person who still does) but since getting the new NAM, the amount of traffic using the airport is very low and so even my largest cities can't reach the mark that allows you to upgrade to the Medium sized airport while before they could maximise to the largest airport (not international).  

 

Is there something in the NAM that uses airports and so they count as airport 'traffic' instead of using my airport? It doesn't really matter, it has no affect on my cities its just strange. I don't think I have any airport mods or anything like that because i've never needed them so not sure.

No, the NAM doesn't do anything that affects airport usage directly.  However, by default, it increases airport capacities.  If you would like to use the original Maxis capacities, select the Custom Installation, and then on the Components page, under "Stations, Ports, and Network Transitions", click the plus sign next to "Maxis Airports" and then select "Low Capacity Airports".  This doesn't affect your airport traffic, but your airports will upgrade faster.
