Gotta give EA marketing/advertising credit, they were ready to sell, sell, sell!

The Radeon HD 7790 SimCity Special Edition features reference clock speeds, 1 GB of memory and includes a free copy of SimCity.

sapphire-hd-7790-simcity-edition,D-X-382In a similar vein to last month’s announcement that AMD would bebundling SimCity with its A8 and A10 APUs, Sapphire has launched a special edition of its Radeon HD 7790 that also includes a free copy of Maxis’ city simulator. Unfortunately, the Sapphire Radeon HD 7790 SimCity Special Edition appears to currently be a Japanese exclusive; it is not known if it will see a wider release.

It's not the first PC game to come bundled with a graphics card.

So I fail to see the point of this thread...

Yes you are correct that this is not the first game but not all games are bundled with a graphics card so that does set the game apart in one fashion, for what its worth.

Given the somewhat rocky start and patching process so far combined with some of the reactions to EA's marketing with Nissan and Crest/Oral B I thought the high visibility sponsorship tie in with a sponsored graphics card suggested all of these agreements were in place prior to release and prior to the great deal of negative press.  The title of the thread was to suggest EA had high expectations for SC13 with a lot of advertising/marketing plans in the pipeline which likely didn't factor in what some may call an almost worse case scenario first few months for the game.  I would think it peculiar if AMD came to EA after the fact and said "SimCity is the kind of product we want to associate our product with" post release.  So I would assume this all happened before release.

This was a point I thought was worth making in addition to the FYI on the SimCity sponsored card.  The point of your reply was crystal clear, thanks for that.

Actually AMD and Nvidia have been sponsors of the new Simcity for many months.

They also had sponsorships for the beta as well.

Companies normally have unrelated marketing tie ins to raise awarness amongst the mass market.

Microsoft markets their video game systems and games with tie ins with Mountain Dew, Pizza Hut, Doritos, MTV, an other products.

I will never undestand what Mountain Dew and Doritos have to do with video games.

IDK about Doritos but my roommate in college would drink at least 4 liters of Mountain Dew while he was on his X-Box.

Have I then overlooked heaps of subliminal messages about booze and cigarettes hidden in my games!
