Very noobish NAM question

I just recently installed SC4, and I wanted to install the mod that made the pathfinding better, and also the overall traffic simulation.

Is it NAM31 I should install? I don't want any extra content...

Thanks!

Yep, that's the latest version (although the bug-fix update, 31.1, is due soon).  When you run the installer, select "Custom Install" and you can deselect every option except  the Traffic Simulator.

Although I can't imagine why you're shunning the awesome trams...

The realistic highways...

The roundabouts, turning lanes, and wider roads...

....but hey, your loss.

A simpler and more precise way of getting just the traffic simulator and its associated options is to check "Traffic Simulator Only" during the installation, not "Custom Installation."  Your game will also load much faster, as you don't have the entire NAM to load.  (Notice that in the Custom installation there are options you can't uncheck.)  So if you've done the Custom Installation but only wanted the traffic simulator, I would recommend uninstalling the NAM using its uninstall program and then reinstalling as I've described.

Also, if all you want is the traffic simulator, there's no need to wait for NAM 31.1, as the simulator is completely unchanged in that version.

I didn't like having to scroll forever to find the piece I wanted and many of them glitched out anyways...

The current version of NAM is so broken, I regret not keeping the old installer. People are better waiting with the eyecandy until at least 31.2

It's not so much scrolling forever, it's more [TAB]-ing forever. :P

Seriously, much has been streamlined. Many networks that used to be composed of individual puzzle pieces (which can be stubborn to work with) are now draggable. I don't remember anything 'glitching out'. Yeah, some constructions are a bit difficult to get right for the first few times, but you get the hang of it after a while.

But of course, if you do fine without them, no problem. :) Good to know about the "only traffic simulator" installation option, btw. That was new to me, too.

    EDIT:

Whoops, another post inbetween... I was referring to Simcity_4U's last post, obviously.

I tried with the real highway 6 lanes turning on elevated terrain and it got really messed up. As did the railway when I tried different pieces, it took longer trying to work that out than the result would be worth so I couldn't bother with it.

Maybe in the near future I'll give it another go.

Well, I consider the RHW to be really advanced stuff. However, I really enjoy the simple possibilities offered by the NAM - you can make many intersections that used to be impossible with the vanilla game, and I also like the roundabouts. They're a no-brainer to make, and they can be very helpful. Draggable GLR is also quite a powerful addition and by no means as difficult to handle as it used to be, when you had to place every single puzzle piece separately.

I am currently on a more or less default install of V31 except I went back and deselected RHW.  My current style doesn't need it, and I don't need the menu clutter.

Well, it depends on what you want to do; people who use RHW heavily are the most affected by the bugs.  But I wouldn't recommend waiting for NAM 31.2 - it could be a while.  NAM 31.1 is an immense improvement over NAM 31.  We've gotten all the most serious bugs fixed, and most of the less serious ones as well.

None of the bugs I've seen, is even related to RHW(even the installer is broken), but you're right: NAM 31,1 will be a huge improvement over 3.1
