HI.

After installing the NAM, I got a new option: Pedestrian Mall Tiles (PMT).

But how do I get it to work. If I put the PMT between a road and the residential area, then the residential area have no road connection as show on this picture, and I dos not help to turn the PMT around.

If there is anything I have misunderstood, please correct me.

How do I get it to work? Any ideas?

Hi there!

The Pedmall tiles are only for Com-development. I often use them to build either malls or city centres. Here in Sweden where I live almost every city's downtown area with the stores are located on pedestrian streets where cars arn't allowed.

However it's a bit hard to use the tiles from time to time. If you zone Com facing a Pedmall tile and it's not growing you could try putting a subway station on it or maybe a GLR-line. The readme says that you have to have a MT-connection to the pedmalls but not always.

Hope you're satisfied with my answer 1.gif

In fact, the readme explains it all. It's long and detailed, so nobody reads it, though.

I have a small query in relation to this matter...

I understand you need to have a MT stop to allow pedestrians to swap from cars/buses etc to foot but does that apply to roadtop mass transit? I am assuming yes as it is a point they can swap over to another transport type but please see my crude diagram. I would test this myself but I get to play this game roughly every two months!

r= road
M = Roadtop mass transit (e.g. cogeos stuff or maltys busstops)
p = pedestrian malls

Many thanks

    @ le_harv: I would assume it works, but I don't use the RTMT lots. However, cogeo has also made a special collection of transition lots for ped malls. Why don't you just ask him via PM? If anybody knows for sure, it's him. Besides, he might want to add the respective information to the readme and/or STEX description. After all, it would be an important warning if the RTMT lots didn't work, and a convincing feature if it did.

    I still can't get it to work... I am on a mac with Rush Hour and the lates NAM (october 2005). Say I lay down a ped mall connector tile with the arrow facing the road. They I lay down a ped mall lot with the arrow facing the connector tile. First, if I zone commercial next to it the zone will not necessarily face the pedestrian mall, and even holding down shift, alt or control won't guarantee it faces the mall (I made sure there were no other roads for the commercial zone to face). Then, even if I manage to get the commercial to face the mall, nothing will ever develop there, although I don't get a no road zot either.

    It took me a bit of confusion before I worked it out... and even now, I am not sure if I am 100% sure with it. All your lots still have to have road access, and face a road (or you get a no road zot), but you can fill in behind them, and in the middle with the ped mall tile of your choice. You can fill a large area in with the Ped Mall, and they DO cross them.

    BUT: A pedestrian has to arrive at the Ped Mall as a pedestrian: ie... via a bus stop, a subway, rail, etc. It doesn't act as a parking lot, so they wont drive to it. If they catch a bus there, they may jump off, and then transverse the ped mall to a subway, to continue their journey... or they may use the ped mall to reach a commercial building (the back of it... because the front faces the road, remember).

    I have a city that has a bunch of people in it, that I use just for testing the news NAM stuff, cause I could never work it all out. It helps when you have more people (and you don't care about any damage to your city). A great experiment is to put Res and Com/Ind near each other, and then connect by road, but make it zig-zag and double back over and over, so the road distance is huge. Then, use things like the ped malls as bridges... you will get an idea of how they work then.

    Unlike real ped malls in places like Australia/Europe (every town/city has a main street that is turned into a ped mall), people in Sim City don't come to hang around and look at the view and eat a baguette. In Sim City it is just about getting from A to B.

    Hope this aids in your (anyone's) confusion. Took me ages before I realised the ped malls worked. Thought that they were just eye candy for a long time until I noticed some action when using the route query tool. So, there you go!

    (BTW. I dl'ed some of marrast's pedestrian walkways about 2 yrs ago after newly arriving at ST. Likewise, I thought that they were eye candy, but liked what they did. Again, it took me some time to realise that they were a route of transport!!! And these ones also functioned as a bus-stop and parking lot (ie. car travel converted to bus). Enjoy)

    i've before gotten working development without the commercial facing the road, only facing the pedmall, but you'll have to provide mass transit adjacent to at least one of the tiles of the pedmall, and the parking garages do work as mass transit (or at least they have when i've tried)

    yes it is possible for commercial to develop facing a Ped Mall.  I am pretty sure that was the whole point of developing the Ped Mall tiles in the first place, so we could create malls of shops for pedestrians only.  ped mall tiles are specifically for commercial.  you cant develop res (or industry i think) facing a ped mall tile.

    with that said you can build your city with all your commercial facing ped mall tiles and use subway stations to get your sims to work.

    I have even made a 250k population city which is nearly carless.  yep only 60 people acutally use their car to get work in my city.  all commercial faces a ped mall and industry is connected by train and bus.  I can post pics if you dont believe me but it can be done.
