problem: tourism/gambling city-things stop making sense

Hi all,

Apart from the frustration I am getting from the server problems, I am actually writing about something else.

I consider myself relatively successful with my first and only city in the region i created. I managed to get all the transportation options into my city including a train station, ferry terminal and a municipal airport. I was getting consistently 3000 or more tourists a day and each of my gambling dens were making $16000 a day.  I had an expo and a tourist attration.

Traffic was high but nvr a problem...I had 2 bus depots with maxed out buses, and I had 2 streetcars stations along 2 avenues. My city had one police precint with 3 helipads and maxed out police cars, and 2 other normal police stations with maxed out car lots. I had one small strip of high density industry and the rest was commercial and residential high density.

Every thing was doing well and at one point I had 450000 simoleons. I was greedy and I wanted to build more gambling dens but 3000 tourists a day was not cutting it. So I decided to plop down Arch de Trompe, which cost 280000 into my city. Then I decided to demolish that stip of industry because of air pollution complaints.

Guess what, next moment, I was going bankrupt losing 4000 cash per hour. My tourists number dropped to 250 a day and my gambling dens lose $2000 a day. I dont understand how plopping down a high tourist attraction caused the number of tourists to drop, I also dont see how destroying dirty industry would cause this. the arch de trompe starting costing 5000$/hr to maintain which does not make sense.

I was mad at this point. I thought it was industry so I claimed my neighboring city and starting zoning industry. It built up but things never improved in my gambling city.

I think there is a bug! pls I hope maxis people read this and fix it....maybe there is a problem with my city which I dont know about, but things should not get worse after plopping down a tourist attraction! please help

I had the same problems. My city was very similar to yours. At one point i had 100.000 residents 1.200.000 simoleons and an income of 12000/h. After a server crash i went back to my city and i had a minus of 8000/h and it never came back to profit.

I don't know what happened. One of my casinos made 29000/day and suddenly down to 3000 but i changed nothing important.

Another thing: My Oil plant stopped importing oil. So i ran out of power (YES "global oil" was checked!)

I stoped playing this city since it is impossible to get it back on track. From a successful gambling city with 1.200.000 simoleons to bankrupt in 45min playtime... Maybe i did some mistakes but I also think there are server problems that may cause some of this problems...

o yeah, i also highly suspect it is because of the servers. since the online play controls the number of people coming to the city.

So new update: I actually demolished my 2 casinos since they never made money ever since that happened. I had to shut down certain modules of certain social services in order to start making a profit again.

right now I am back to making 3k/hr. I solved the problem by claiming the neighboring city and creating a industry/university town. So now I am getting more tourists over at the first city.

I still dont understand what went wrong...

the weird ting is, I now have 4 police stations in the first city and they still keep saying crime is high. I think it is kind of ridiculous to have so much crime now that I bulldozed both my casinos. With 3 helicopter police, they still tell me police cant get to criminal in time. I dont even have ground traffic congestion in my city.

I think the same is for fire. I have 3 fire stations with full modules, and they still tell me fire is out of control. WTF.

then people in my first city says they want education. And now my new city has grade school, high school and university. I even built school bus stops in the first city so they can get to school in the 2nd city. let the simulation run abit, and gues what...no regional students as reflected when I click on my schools. WTF moment again.

I am also digging coal in my 2nd city, and they tell me coal is overflowing. So I clicked use locally coal on my trade depot....thinking that coal will be transported to my 1st city's power plant (I know about gift option). Never did and I still have to accept global coal. many things i still don't understand...but maybe it is me being an idiot.

There are definitely some bugs yet to be worked out in region play. Yesterday was the first time trading between cities started working for me. But the last thing you mentioned about the coal I don't think is a bug. I think you should leave it as "use locally" but then go to region view and send the resources to the city with the coal plant.

    Hi DrKing2020,

I guess you are right about the coal.

But I have another issue with the gifting option. I tried to gift 250000 simoleons from my 2nd city to my first. and it took the simulation 30 min to recognize the gift, and it finally made it over. But I definitely thought I lost the money for good.

another issue is the Digital Deluxe edition ,which I still feel like it is totally not worth it. I bought it thinking that I could make more "specialized" cities with a French looking, or british looking or german looking city. Wrong! Based on the description of the DD edition on the main website, I was misled to think that I had an option to choose how my cities turned out to look. It so happens that the DD edition just allows you to plop down more types of tourist landmarks such as Eiffel Towel, Big Ben and stuff like that. It does state on the landmark description that your buildings close to these landmarks will start looking like landmarks of that country. For example, if you build an Eiffel Tower, your buildings start looking french. But no, after plopping down a 550000 simoleon Eiffel Tower, not onlydid my number of tourist not increase, none of my buildings started looking french. What a letdown.

the only different thing the DD edition allows me to do is to build a French Police station. I do hope that there were more features apart from this one.

letdown! oh and the problem with crime is the most surprising. I have like 950 criminals a day (even with no casinos) and only 9 arrests a day. This is with 3 completely furnished police stations and one precinct with 3 helipads. when I click on the police button, I see that there are plenty of police cars around and also criminals but nothing happens to them. even my wife who does not play this game thinks its stupid how a city needs 4 police stations and still have <10% arrests in a day.

It is a bug. Tourists stuck in the hotels (not casino rooms but in commercial zone hotels). To fix it go to city specialization pick tourism then click in left down corner on tourism filter (small camera). Now you will see in color only tourists, tourists attractions and commercial zone hotels (blue ones). This hotels should have a bar showing you how many visitors stays in. Now pick bulldozer tool and destroy this hotels. After a moment tourists will start visiting your city again.
