Hi all, since the new simcity got announced i reinstall the 4th with the will to understand how it works.
I've spent lot of time reading on the net how things should work but i must admit that i'm still a complete $%&^!.
And here we go with my problem:
I wanted to create a new city, actually developed into 3 different tiles:
1) R$$$,C$$$,I-HT;
2) I-D, energy, dump;
3)R$, C$

Right now i managed to drive up a little the demand for the dirty industries but they're not developing and i can't understand why:
2)http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/8500/industrial.png
3)http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/6015/residential.png

SC4 Deluxe with only Census Mod + dependencies.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The only thing that stands out is that you have 14981 commuters from simnation to your industrial city that has over 23000 jobs. Even though there is demand showing, the jobs are not being filled.

I would supply more commuters from your residential city to fill the vacant jobs

    Thank you for the answer.

If i re-zone the commercial into residentials into the first town that should do the trick ?

Most likely. But, judging from your demand graphs, you can't zone more residential. A huge demand is for your industrial.

Is the dirty industry able to develope into skyscrapers or just denser units ?

Could it be a problem of space since the whole map is already filled with High Density ?

No, you'll never see skyscrapers in your industrial. They will only appear/grow mostly in commercials.

The thing is, in developing a city, it is recommended to start the zoning with low density. And then you can upgrade later when the time is right.

You can always dezone if you feel like you just wasting your space, you're the major and you control everything. Only, when you rezone or zoning, please pay attention to your demand graphs. Most player (not all) will likely zone and zone when they see a sky high demand, but that's actually wrong. This game is all about balance. You going out of balance, and you can kiss your city good bye. You can control the balance by zoning slowly and keep an eye to the demand graph. Use education to forward to the next level and use hospitals, police stations, parks and other civic buildings to encourage your city growth. Only, this time you must also learn to manage the city, as those civic buildings will required money. Pay attention to their funding and make a good comparison to your income. You don't wanna face bankruptcy.

The other important key in developing city here is education. You wanna keep those dirty industry within your city? Then keep the education low. You want skyscrapers and industrial high tech? You better start to provide your city with education buildings.

What do you mean with "[...]you can upgrade later when the time is right."

"You can always dezone if you feel like you just wasting your space"

I don't feel like if it's wasted... i just don't know what to do to make em grow anymore.

That's the region that i'm playing with:

Your link didn't work for some reason.  If you add up all the population in each of your cities, and the number of jobs you will have a balanced when there are two Sims for every job.  If you don't have that, adjust accordingly.

Well, sir, you did say about problem with space cause you already zone the whole map with high density, yes? That's why i told you about dezoning. It means destroy/buldoze some of your area, it could be your industrial, commercial or residential, it's up to you, and rebuild those with new area.

You do realize that there are three level of zoning for commercial, residential and industry, right? The low density, medium and high density. Now what i meant is, in starting a city it is better to first zone using low density and than after some time you can then "upgrade" the low density by dezoning it with medium or high density. It's more like saving money for future, in this case, because low density is cheap. After your city is profitable, then you can use the medium or high density and rezone those low density.

I forgot to add that the whole tile is filled with high density industry so i cannot grow horizontally anymore, just vertically.

I don't know if there is something special to do to develop dirty industry vertically or if it's at the maximum rate for that tile dimension.

Sorry for any misunderstaing i may create but i'm not english and some concepts comes hard to be explained.

Your industry doesn't change very much. I observed this in a new city in a quite developed region, where some I-HT grew at the very beginning. I'm not sure how many decades I played that city, but it was a while, and I had only a single factory change in all that time.

Conversions I see are from I-D to I-HT and the other way round, depending on pollution and education levels. I haven't quite figured I-M out, which sometimes pops up when there is free space. Other conversions I see is when I rezone I-D (or I-M(?); never I-HT) from medium to high. But that's a one time thing. That's about it.

    Review:

    • There are three densities in each zone, and you should start with the lowest.
    • You can overlay any lots with zoning of the same type but a different density without destroying the lot content.
    • Industrial only has three stages and no high buildings
    • C and R have eight stages with tall buildings appearing in stages 5 - 8.  Taller buildings in higher stages, but not guaranteed.
    • The only time you really need to bulldoze a building is if you are going to replace it with something civic and not always then
    • If you change the zoning type the existing building is automatically destroyed.  E.g. C to R.
    • I-Ag can actually be slowly consumed for urban purposes until you reach the actual farm buildings.  At that point, a new zone type destroys the farm.  However some I-Ag zones may remain.  You should clean those up using the dezoning tool (v).

And don't try for an all high wealth city.  This is pushing a big rock up a hill for ever (the labour of Sisyphus).  Keep a balance in the city.  There can only be one conductor for an orchestra, one CEO for a company.  No more than about 15% of your Sims should ever be R$$$.  A CO$$$ building might employ up to three or four R$$$ the rest will be lower classes.

    I-HT Employs R$$ aswell ?

Is it possible to balance a city with only R$$/$$$ with CO$$/$$$ and I-HT ?

I-HT has relatively few jobs, compared to other industries. Due to a rounding error, R$$$ jobs at most lots, which are supposed to make up 10%, get rounded down to zero. fixes this by changing the value for R$$$ to the lowest possible value that doesn't give the rounding error (12%).

The bug explains why your R$$$ jobs disappear when your industry changes from I-D to I-HT.

One thing at a time.  Hold on the industry doubler until you are sure it is something you really want.  The fix is a fix.

No-cd patches are beyond the pale of our discussion.  They are illegal.

If you don't have a CD drive, you should cancel your order and get the Digital Download version of Deluxe from either Amazon or Gamersgate.  Diskless, fully patched, and, if you capture the installer after the download, always available.  It is version 1,1,641,0.

There are ways to make it left-hand drive if you need that.

Write your installer on external media (flash drive), and you'll always have it.

I would never purchase a machine without an optical drive.  I have too much stuff on external media.

If not, then return it.  I am unaware of any disk resident version of SC4 Deluxe that provides version 1,1,641,0.  Besides if you don't have an optical drive, how will you load it?

Wrong question, I guess. Also, you still need an optical drive to get the iso.

Don't you have any offers on amazon in Italy or where you are? Here, the Deluxe version is $4.99, and you can take another 25% off with a coupon code that is mentioned directly below it.

That's not nice then. Then again, you mostly paid for the new game, anyway.

Btw, I usually hook up a different computer with a CD drive and use it as network drive if I want to install stuff from CD on computers without drive, as I don't have any external drive, either.

Probably, although I never tried it. I usually don't like my computers having anything open to the network, so I only use this method temporarily and haven't tried it with games. Having a version that doesn't check CD's would be preferable.

Btw, Gamersgate also sells the game, although the price isn't really good today.
