SC4 + X = Driver Crash?

So ever since I moved to this pc a couple years back, I have the strange problem that I can cause 2 driver crashes on demand, no matter what version the respective drivers are:

    1. SC4 + Youtube: gives me a 100% rate of video-driver caused BSOD after a couple seconds
    2. SC4 + any media player: gives me a 100% rate of noisy sounddriver crashes that eventually lead to a system freeze

I wonder, is this a common problem with newer PCs and multitasking like that or is it yet another strain of my PC's character?

vista 64bit, nvidia gtx560ti always latest drivers, realtec hd onboard with latest drivers aswell, 8gb ddr2, intel c2q q8300, no overclocking whatsoever.

I also experimented a bit with command line parameters, but it seems to have no effect, so I stick to my standard line:

    -Intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -d:DirectX -CPUCount:1 -CPUPriority:high -w

For openers, lose the CPUPriority option.  You don't need it, and it raises hell with the processor dispatcher in the O/S.  With the CPU set to use only one, it will get redispatched unless the system is excessively busy any time its timer runs out.

I think you are encountering a weakness in Vista, which is getting pretty long in the tooth and was really a public beta for W 7.  Why not switch up to 7?

There is also the possibility that you have a media settings conflict with the game and the other apps.  Couple of things to check:

    • Your hardware settings for your GPU should be such that the loading program sets the 3D options (off for SC4).
    • If you are running with a background sound player, turn the audio off in the game.  Option is -audio:off

I've adjusted 3d options, let's see what happens
used to have an application profile for sc4, I might have missed to make a new one after the last reset...

never thought about leaving vista. but I'm planning to get a new cpu and board (socket 2011) anyways, maybe I'll abandon vista in the same turn then
