I'll take 2 places, and you choose which one you would prefer to go to.

    I voted for

NY (even though I've been there)

    Paris (Parlez-vous Francais?)

Rome (tough, but made the choice)

Sydney (Rio's kinda crime-ish and Sydney has architecture)

    Hong Kong (preferred architecture)

Sydney and Rio aren't really comparable.
I have been to Sydney many times, but I still think there are better cities out. Sydney may have the cliched Coathanger and the Opera House, but is there really all that much to do there? Come down south a bit and we have the laneway cafes, a better music scene and equally stunning architecture.

Mais oui, je parle Français un peu.  But I chose London.  I've been to both, but I didn't have enough time in either, and I'd rather not contend with those stuck-up Parisians while I am on vacation.

I'd love to go to London, but the are so many things in Paris I'd like to see like

    La Toure de Eiffel

    Arc de Triomphe

    Cathedral de Notre Dame

    La Lourve

    Le Sacre Coure.

Pardon bad spelling, I'm still learning French,

I wouldn't go to le Cenre Pompidu. It just, no offense, just looks ugly.

I also wouldn't go to the catacombs, I'm a bit of a scaredy cat

Live just outside Chicago but I've never been to NY. Can't imagine I'd stay long in either, though.

Paris seems a lot more laid back to me than London. And the architecture is more interesting to me.

I'll see enough of San Francisco from the airplane on the way to Tokyo. But I'd rather do Rome.

Rio. Strictly Rio over Sydney just this once simply for the beach and girls on the beach.

俺の日本語がいい。東京に行きたい。 Admittedly Hong Kong is a beautiful city. But I'd much prefer the sights of Tokyo.

You really do have poor French spelling, and I sympathize.  It is not always a sure bet that you can hang and e on the end of a feminine word.  One of the things I really hated about the French I had to learn in high-school was all the irregular verbs.  However, my four years of high-school French got me around for a month in the Aquitaine.  If I was to go to France again, I think I'd spend a lot of time in Bordeaux then hop down to Nice.

Notre Dame is all very well, but I really liked the Eglise St. Michel in Bordeaux.  It is a retired cathedral, the new one, St. Front looks like a mosque without minarets.  St. Michel was built in the 10th century and when you walk into that building, you know it.  The history kind of smacks you over the head.  I've no idea why St. Front replaced it as the cathedral church of Bordeaux.

As for the Eiffel Tower, once up, have lunch in the restaurant, back down, and that's enough.

The Louvre is worth a couple of months.  The Mona Lisa is far too over-hyped.  There are lots of great exhibits there.  I prefer the Titians in the city museum at Bordeaux.  Titian used some of the most fantastic colours I've ever seen.  Just gorgeous.

Your other sites are interesting architecture, but Bordeaux was a city when Paris was just a Roman village called Lutetia.  The Romans called it Burdegilia and imported much wine from there.  They say that the old forum there is the largest square in Europe.  I find that hard to believe, but I've never seen St. Peter's in Rome, so I really have no good standard of comparison.

If you go to Paris you'll find that the school French you have will work.  It is a langue d'oui area.  The Aquitaine is langue d'oc.  Slightly different.  When I first arrived someone told me I sounded like "un Basque Espaniol".  Took a while to fit in and get them to speak slowly enough so I could understand.

I am a brit so for me its London, its like a holiday destination in your own country so many things to do and see, and without a doubt its the worlds capital becuase of its mix of cultures from all over the world aswell as its links with the world whether it be historical, financial, industrial, retail or even those who are there waiting for their connect flights from heathrow and I love the fact that people see this part of London and that why I believe all are welcomed to it...

However I would like visit NY as it is simular in some respect to London...

I live in one of the cities on your list but have never been to any of the others.

    But anyways:

New York vs Chicago: I suppose by default I have to choose Chicago since I live in New York

    London vs Paris: London

San Francisco vs Rome: either. Both are on my to do list

Rio Di Janeiro vs Sydney: Sydney, though it's not a high priority

Tokyo vs Hong Kong: Tokyo, though I doubt I will ever go there since the language is impossible and I don't care for the food

I have been to New York but its the kind of city that I could spend forever in. I decided against putting in in this poll, but the cities I love (tied with New York) are Baltimore, Philly, and Washington. I'm so north east its not even funny.

Why would you compare Rio to Sdyney?

Rio has all sorts of poverty problems, that I'd rather not see in person to save myself from a heart-attack. Meanwhile Sydney is one of the top GDP nations of the planet.

I'd also pick Hong Kong over Tokyo mainly because I haven't exactly heard the greatest stories of the Japanese being very warm and friendly to outsiders.

And just as a matter of interest, you missed the big Canadian centres: Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria.  The only one still on my bucket list is Victoria.  And no, I didn't miss St. John's.  If you want to see St. John's go to Barrie, Ontario.  It's on a lake and not the Atlantic Ocean, but land-wise very similar.

No love for Ottawa? I'd scratch off Winnipeg too. I heard Kingston Ontario is a lot like Victoria minus the coastal climate. Ottawa is neat because its the capital and its so far North. The Winterlude festival is great and you can skate the canal all day and still not see it all.

New York vs Chicago: Never been to Chicago but i still prefer New York.

London vs Paris: I've been to London, so, Paris.

San Fransisco vs Rome: I'd rather Rome, for architecture reason.

Rio vs Sidney: I went to Sidney twice, so, Rio. Despite their internal problems, i'm dying to try their hang gliding.

Tokyo vs Hong Kong: I went to Tokyo last year. Ok technically i was just passed, cause i went straight to Shizouka after from the airport for only around 30 minutes. I'd like to go again and this time for more than a day, at least. You can wait Hong Kong.

@ Nonny: If (or when) you go to Victoria, BC, make sure to go in between the end of June to early August, the flowering season.

@ bunky: Kingston, Ont is nothing compared to Victoria. I go to Kingston once every two weeks, have a son there. It is beautiful (more or less) but not spectacular. ;)

I have been in every city above. I hate NY and Chicago and don't wanna go to anyone of these anymore, nor do I like very much Sydney and San Fransisco, but all the other places I will be willing to go. The place on earth I like the most are Stockholm and Wellington (NZ)

@bunky:  I've lived in Kingston.  I am a former Queens student.  I've also visited there for a sail-in with CPSS.  Meh!

Ottawa is not my kind of city.  It has only a few merits, the least of which is the federal government and the plant that goes with it.  Rather a nice piece of architecture, but only to be expected considering the period in which it was designed and built.  For the rest, a few interesting tech companies, and overall, only the Rideau canal for sightseeing enjoyment.  Meanwhile, you can take those Bauhaus towers and blow them up for all I care.

Wow, you guys have all been to so many interesting places, I feel so boring.

But like I said, I'm so northeast that if I were any more northeast, I would be so northeast that I would be so northeast that you could not begin to comprehend how northeast I would be. Its ok if you don't understand, it's pretty complicated.

The last time I left the northeast was when I went down to Arlington, Virginia (which may as well be in the northeast) while visiting DC.

Well, I've been to some interesting cities in my life that are not on this list:

    - Berlin

    - Luxembourg-Ville

    - Copenhagen

    - Göteborg

    - Stockholm

Also, I find some of the comparions unfair, like Rome vs San Fransisco. I mean, Rome has much, much, MUCH more history and interesting places to visit than San Fran. Rio vs Sydney is also unfair due to huge wealth differences.

    I'd change the following choices:

    - San Fransisco or Los Angeles

    - Sydney or Toronto

    - Rome or Berlin

    - Rio or Cape Town

    I'd also add:

    - Amsterdam or Venezia

    - Singapore or Kuala Lumpur

Looks like Tokyo,NYC and Sydney are the most popular destinations.

would not mind  going to any of them except NYC.

You are quite young.  Give it a while.  Since you are all north east, have you been to Saint John or Halifax?  Both within driving range.

Saint John, on the Bay of Fundy, is a most interesting place if you like tidal bores and reversing falls.

Halifax is probably the biggest deep water harbour on the eastern seaboard.  It has a lot of history attached going back much further than the U.S. Revolutionary war.  The Bedford Basin or inner Halifax harbour was the assembly point for many WW II convoys to the U.K.  The marine museum there is well worth a visit, and it is only a short ferry ride over to Dartmouth and the big naval installations there.

I've been to both NY and Chicago, didn't spend enough time in either city, but each had pros and cons so I can't lambaste either city.

I chose Paris over London, even though it was a tough choice, because I've always wanted to go to France and Paris seems to be a natural starting point to visiting that country, although I'd rather go to Marseille (spelling?) and Nice.

Rome v San Fran was difficult, but I chose Rome simply because it's an ancient city with stunning architecture and I am extremely interested in Roman history. But I plan on going to San Fran sometime in the near future. Tangentially, I've been to LA and San Diego, and would really like to go to San Fran to knock off the 3 major cities in California.

I chose Sydney over Rio because I want to go to Australia and visit the entire country, not just Sydney. I've also been to Rio many years ago and it is a decent place if you stay away from the favelas and maintain situational awareness...

Tokyo v Hong Kong was kinda tough, mainly because I have no strong desire to go to an East Asian city (sorry) and I used to live in Tokyo.

This list is very subjective and I respect everyone's insight into their choices, but for me, the cities I'd much rather go to/cities I would recommend to others are not on this list, but to each their own :)

My bucket list for places to go include:

    Marseilles/Nice

    Istanbul

    Savannah, GA

    Bar Harbor, ME

    Vancouver

    Barcelona

    Portland, Ore

    Cities I recommend:

    Amman

    Atlanta

    Charleston, SC

Charlottesville, VA (and the entire Shenandoah Valley :) )

    Charlotte, NC

    Ottawa

    Petoskey, MI

Annapolis, MD & the Eastern Shore

    Asheville, NC
