Well, i started BaT-ting a while ago, thanks to the great tutorials on Simtropolis, SCC and Simbiotic and i have also started a thread about my BAT buildings there, see here:
http://simbiotic.jconserv.net/viewtopic.php?t=336

Anyway, i decided to start a BAT showcase over here too, to learn more especially from the experienced BATters.9.gif

I'm currently working on my third BAT building, Saint Paul's Church.

Here's a preview of the church.
church6no.jpg

As you can see, only the walls are textured at the moment, the rest is still untextured because i can't find a suitable texture for it(yet),(tried imageafter.com and mayang.com)

So does anyone know, where you can get free textures besides that two sources? And is it possible to use for example a photo from a digicam as a texture?

Oh and a comment about my church would be great too.

Thx, Vario.44.gif

I like what I see so far, is the model actually complete?

As for finding textures, I'm afraid I can't help.

Very, very good! I love churches, monastaries and the like. Great work on the details and the Steeple; great shapes you used to crown of the brick! Very Churchy feel.

I too am BATting now, but not nearly this far along yet.

Thank you all for your comments.
I have some bad news for you though, unfortunality the old model was corrupted when i load it into Gmax last evening, so i have to redo the church.

That's how it looks right now, slightly different than my previous version, but i think the new version looks even better. This time i made a backup of the model file, just in case...2.gif
Nevertheless, i hope you like this model too.
    church0jt.jpg

The model is not completed yet, i will still put in some detail and i need to find a shingle texture for the nave roof.

@sharkbait16: The real church is located in Bremerhaven, Germany, i will try to find a picture and post it later on.

Germany, A country known for it's beautiful historic churches! It still looks grand.

I have a small shingle pack, in 4 colors I think. I should post it in the BAT Workshop forum: Official Textures thread. Heres the link.

    ^^Lol, yes, exactly.9.gif2.gif

@at all: Thank you all for the posted links, they helped me
    with the texturing.

Anyway, the church is basically ready for rendering, but i'm still not an expert with the right nightlighting, so do you like it that way, or should i add more lights?

    This is an excellent BAT.
The nightlights looks good, maybe add a light outside above the mainentrence.
The textures are also good but there seems to be a problem with the rooftextures on the mainroof, but it could be just the preview image?

Here's a new building i started to work on:
    screenshot23115lk.jpg

It will become an appartment block when it is finished.
The image shows the first house of the block.

Since i'm quite busy with university at the moment, i don't have much time to work on it at the moment, so it can take a while, before it will be finally released.

    Stay tuned for more updates

Okay sorry, it took over a half year for an update, so the bad news is the file got corrupted so it can't be read by Gmax anymore and is lost forever.

I'll took a long break from Batting before i started again last week.

Here's a new icelandic house i started batting a few days ago (well i hope it looks icelandic) 2.gif. Originally i intented to release it for my Icelandic related CJ Islenska, but if there are enough interest, i would be pleased to release them here on the  STEX as well.

    Church-2006-may-17-002.jpg

This what i got so far, it does not have any textures at the moment, since i didn't find any suitable ones yet.

So let me know what you think about the house, i'm open for every idea and suggestions what can be done to improve it. 4.gif

nice building, very simplistic. Maybe you could add more details also if this going to be a house, it will need a door.

@ tzotzil99:  That's interesting, so which part of town did you live?

The church is located very central at the Hafenstrasse in the town district Lehe, so i'm pretty sure you must have seen it some time. 2.gif

Today i'll uploaded another church i have made on the STEX I made it originally for my site but i thought it would be cool idea if the people at Simtropolis could share this BAT as well.

    The link is here: https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=16072

So if you like it or if you have problems with the church, please post your comments in this thread. 4.gif

It's been a long time since i posted my last creation here, huh? 2.gif

In September i started on a new BAT project, rebuilding the Buergermeister Smidt Gedaechtniskirche (Mayor Smidt Memorial Church) of

Bremerhaven, Germany.. It is an rather complicated model, so i tried  to put in the best i can into this church.

Right now about 90% of the model is considered to be done (texturing will be later on), however i since became a Mister Perfect lately in BATting, i'm not totally satisfied with the upper roof. Does somebody has an idea, how i can create such a "holey" look for the roof like in the original pic, or would it become rather polygon heavy and so not worth the effort?

    BAT picture

For comparison, picture of the real church

Comments, Suggestions and help very much appreciated. 4.gif

indeed this would be rather heavy on polygons, but i'd say go for it and see how it turns out.

well, as comments and suggestions go here are couple:
    1. Nave windows have very wrongly shaped arches. Not so classically Gothic they are, aren’t they? And in light of your claim of becoming  Mr. Perfect it is just plain wrong – one of the most characteristic features is all screwed and it wouldn’t really take much extra polygons…
    2. Roof, For starters it is of altogether wrong shape. The original is sort of octagonal pyramid, while yours is a cone. See the difference? As for creating all the holes – some criss-cross pattern could imitate the intricate design of the original well enough and it wouldn’t’ be overly heavy on polygons either. Plus there is common misconception about polygons – for render speed and also viewport speed, number of Object could be your much worse enemy!! It just coincide that high polygon count comes with huge number of objects – not good bating practice! Keep number of object as small as possible and you’ll notice very significant improvements in speed even with same or even higher polygon count for the entire scene.
    3. Gothic portico is missing above the clock

There are other smaller issues with it as well, but I would say basically that could be passable…

Okay thanks to you Glenni and SimFox, i'm going to take your suggestions and rework the model and see if i can make it better than the current one.

simwario: You've got some really nice work here. When modeling arched windows, keep in mind that due to the perspective at which it renders, BAT has a tendency to compress vertically anything you've modeled, so a window that looks tall and narrow when you model it will become shorter and fatter. (Everything will, as a matter of fact.) A lot of this can be solved by scaling your entire building up about 20-30% before you export it.

However, with some objects -- I've especially noticed this with arched windows -- you have to deliberately exaggerate some of their features in order for them to appear correctly when exported. What I do with arched windows is actually "pinch" the top of the arch some. The window should already be an editable spline, since you likely created them by welding half a circle to the top of a rectangle, so just select the object, select Vertices in the modify rollout, then select the vertices of the arches and drag them in towards each other some. Also, you can pull them down some, which will exaggerate the taper. You may have to do it even more with these, since the windows in the actual building come to a point at the top -- they are not smooth arches. Just experiment and do preview renders until they look just right!

I look forward to seeing this when you have it finished -- I love cathedrals!

@nofunk: Thanks for this useful advice, i will try to experiment with that.

Minor update this time, after some unsuccessfull trial and error attempts

i constructed a new roof, the criss cross pattern on the roof doesn't really work for me right now... but i'm going to experiment with this further. However the thick lines on the upper part of the roof are now clearly visible so imo it already looks a bit better than the previous simple cone.

    Well what do you think?
