Parks should be zoned

One of my minor criticisms of the beta is the difficulty in placing parks. The sizes are odd, they never fit where you hope, and they align poorly with offset grids. Why can't these be zoned? Wouldn't that be a nice solution?

Anyone else have comments on parks - or suggestions on how to place them more effectively? Someone mentioned using dirt roads, but then I just end up using even more of my very limited space to build.

At least in Cities XL, you can "zone" parks as filler areas. I wish that feature was in SimCity 2013.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

What I personally did was not to regard the parks as a park, but just as an element within it. In several cities I created that way I created park simply as follows:

  • Regular street and avenue pieces forming the outer border.
  • Dirt streets used as a form of paths within my park.
  • Trees used as filled to fill in the gaps.

Is it perfect? No, you'll get bloody cars going through your park! But it allowed me to do more with creating parks than just trying to plop a few of those pieces somewhere on a grid and never really fitting in.

If they'll introduce pedestrian only roads at some points, I'm settled tbh. The park elements can easily be connected to it, and you can lay down your roads in such a fashion to angle the park elements in the way you desire anyway.

Some more variation in trees, and addition of plants and flowers to plop would be nice as well of course, but let's hope we'll be able to see the community add such things sooner than later.

Part of the issue is that the ability to rotate parks and ploppables seems to not be available in this Simcity. I don't know why. When I was trying the beta, I try to find a way to rotate the parks so it can fit in the space I left especially for parks but for some reason it would only allow me to place in a certain orientation. Yes, I place it next to a road so unless there is only one entrance/exit for the park I don't see why the ability to rotate parks and ploppables is not available.

Maxis? Any comments?
