City connection traffic problem.

I have a question along the same line so I'll ask it here if that's ok seeing that the original poster's question has been answered.

I've built a region where the cities are only connected via train and highway with the mass transit only mod making most sims use the train. I recently built a new city and connected it via rail to a more established city (27k pop, 25k jobs). In the new smaller city (12k pop, 4k jobs) about 4k sims take the train to the established city. When I go to play that other city, 15k sims are going to the new smaller city. I don't understand why there would ever be so many going there. This seems to happen in many of my cities where for some reason the sims always clog up the infrastructure going out of the city and don't drive local commercial demand. It's not like the other city offers different jobs either.

If I'm reading your situation correctly, you might be experiencing an eternal commuter issue. Basically, this occurs when Sims "see" the jobs in an adjacent city as being closer than those within city itself. If this is the case in several adjoining cities, these eternal commuters will continue to move around the loop (never "finding" a job) and add to traffic. This all, of course, depends on how your cities are situated and the development within each. More information on the issue can be found here.

One clear indicator of the eternal commuter loop is where you have more people on the train going out than you have population.

I probably do have this eternal loop problem. I guess I just need to be more mindful of which cities connect to each other.

The sure way to tell is to break what appears to be a loop and let it run a while to see what happens. If that is not the case, don't save it.
