The year has no effect on anything in the game; it's just a number. You won't see flying cars if you set it to 3000 and you won't see horses and wagons if you set it back. The game is perpetually set in the present (somewhere around 2003, when it was released). The game just isn't coded to change over time.

So there's not really any point to changing the year, and I don't know of any mods that do so. If it bothers you that much, the best advice I can give you is to pretend that the beginning year (00) represents 2000.

You shouldn't be able to get skyscrapers in year zero unless you plop them.

I doubt the game would able to handle year numbers like 2012 anyway; it might cause it to crash. Like dzekins said, it's how old your city is, not really the date.

In any case, I don't think it's possible. The only way I've heard of is (vaguely) the cheat code you were saying doesn't work.

Alot of my cities have been up in the 21's... mostly because I plop a park than fast forward to get the effect quicker, or to get the tiles to grow faster....

    I have wondered the same

Have you used the correct format for SimDate cheat?

"SimDate [Value] - changes the in-game date to the value you entered, this is useful for testing seasonal props. Use a date after 12/31/1999 in the format SimDate 12 31 1999."

If the game was on pause when entering the date you need to unpause to see the change.

I once tried the time cheat in couple of cities and noticed that atleast the data view graphs were messed up. I don't know if there are other things that would get weird in game if you force the date to jump back or forth, maybe not, but just in case I wouldn't use it if I wanted to grow a healthy and balanced city.

^ I would do that only at the very start of a city before dropping in even the first street.
