More challenge?

I have played sc4 in the past (from 2004). A month ago I grabbed the game again and started to build new regions (old ones were gone).

I have built big cities and regions, downloaded some custom content and mods and built more regions with them. I have built even more cities using cheats.

Still there is a thing that is not accomplished. The game has no challenge and it's just city-building. Balancing the expenses is not an issue even on a new region. Later when region is developed, I will just end to HUGE profits on every city. Is there any way to make the game more challenging?

Ps.

Downloading custom content is surely fun, but it takes time to find good buildings (and their loads of dependencies) and I have to load them one by one. That results same maxis buildings (and few custom) to grow over and over again to every city i build. Are there any building packs (Like R$$$ building pack including several generic but realistic-to-scale buildings)

1. I wonder why Simcity 4 never had scenarios like 3000. You could try Simcity 3000, that game always had fun challenges and especially the auto disasters button. It was extremely difficult to build with disasters on. Some out there should make a Simcity 4 scenarios mod that would be similar to 3000.

I guess one way to make it challenging is to try specializing cities and make challenges for yourself.

For example:

Make a city with the highest Education levels.

A region with the least pollution.

Have a city with no traffic jams at all.

Get the highest Mayor Rating.

Build a fantasy city with the most outrageous design ever, and still make it functional.

Etc…

There are tons more options to build a city than just balancing the budget.

2. Here are some building packs by me with absolutely no dependencies.

Here are some building packs by Madhatter106, none of these have dependencies.

There are even more than I listed here… You can check out his content here…

If you want a challenge try my maps. They will want to make you tear your hair out but in all seriousness the previous poster has the right idea but when it comes to buildings the best ones in my opinion are on the LEX but they have dependencies associated with them. That's the nature of the beast i'm afraid. Buildings are only as good as the BATTER and the textures and props used. Matt325 has some good buildings and has a larger selection on the LEX than here on the STEX. SimGoober has a large selection of buildings here on the STEX and they are extremely realistic but tend to be larger lots to show off their detail.

Also try CAM and the BSC BTE lots. In a nutshell CAM will allow your cities to grow beyond their original parameters and the BSC BTE lots work in the same manner as the rewards in the standard SC4 game meaning you have to have meet certain requirements in order to unlock certain buildings.

There's a mod for the game that starts you out with $0 when you select the hard difficulty setting when creating a city. Go download it. (I don't have the link, sorry)

I have been playing almost continuously since the game came out. It is a matter of imagination and creativity to find new challenges. SimCity4 with the NAM (can't live without it) is open ended, so you can do what you like.

Some people use the program as a canvas on which to create City Journals to post here in the CJ section. This can result in some useful feedback on your artistry.

I don't do that because I feel no need.

You could try creating your own lots and buildings. Install the BAT, and have fun with the learning curve. I did that, but feel no drive to do more. I occasionally create a map that I really like and I install it on the STEX, but that's about the end of my work currently for the community.

Currently I am working on regions, working each tile into a sensible rural situation, then picking a few of them to grow into urban centres. This is beginning to pall, and I am considering scrapping my regions and starting over on some new tack. I've been doing a lot of work with Pegasus' Sea Ports and the marina as well as some other custom content from various makers. Here is an example of my more or less sparse work.

This is not on the default NYC map, and you might find that interesting.

If you want something difficult, try this one:

Thank you all who have replied here.

Did not think that there are so many players active here.

I am using currently NAM which acts like a cheat. I have half million resident cities with only roads and subways under them(station on every block).

There are absolutely no traffic jams because NAM allows much more traffic congestion than vanilla. NAM makes the sims to commute more wisely. In vanilla most of the residents used car but in NAM they use mostly public transport (less pollution). In vanilla I could have loads of abandoned hi-rises and high commuting times the capacity of the traffic system was limited and most sims commuted long distances within the city.

I have all kind of schools in my cities (Education raises to 200 quickly).

Mad Hatter must have read my thoughts or something else. I downloaded the packs and the building diversity within the small offices has increased significantly. Still there are no skyscrapers in those packs (I tend to spam high-density commercial).

I downloaded your packs as well. They fit welll and increase the building variety on low and medium density zones.

That is something awesome. I don't think I could ever do the same.

I started a new region a week ago. (The smallest I could find from Maxis regions).

I builded a central city and I'm planning to build suburban areas later

Check the very first page on my City journal, and look at all the rules and challenges I placed on myself. I was bored and felt there was no longer a challenge even on hard, so I turned up to 11 and now find starting and growing my cities into what I did, was an ordeal.

If you can't find a challenge with all of that, then you sir, are indeed, Mr Simcity.

here are some in-game screencaps i quickly made to give you an idea of the texture and detail of just a FEW of the buildings i have. these are mostly LEX buildings that have dependencies which shows you the attention to detail the lotters put into making them

i always build every region with its own story, since the beggining og first city, story normaly starts as a new colony.

The story im using now is that world got in big ecological mess and alot of world got destroyd by big cunamies ,storms and stuff like that, and after big volcano eruption a new gigantic island form, so than a small group of people develop theyr first village , grow farms , make green power and everything ells, now my goal is to play pritty green(as the worlds ecology is alrady mest up)i know that alot of people just rush and try to make big metropolitans with huge towers and what now ells, for me thats booring, i normaly build villages first and expand over the land, the slowly some of them develope into cities and such. Than to make it more challanging i act like a major events happend, like storm destroys part of citie, volcano eruption destroys a part of island, even city economical colapse where i lower all bugged for police schools and such and act like city dosnt have enough money to pay them. ive even done zombie outbreaks or alien invasions.

the game really have big boundaries and everything is already there its only the imagination you need to use.

I feel you bro, I wanted that feature as well so badly.  I guess you could just be true to yourself and sentence your own objectives ... or let others do it for you:

I want you to build a city in Hard difficulty that reaches the following in less than 100 years or in less than 30 hour game-time(use a software to count that):

    *500.000 citizens
    *1000 000 simleons
    *+50000 $/ month budget
*Play it always in 2nd speed(pause when afk)
*do not get corrupt (not a single mission that lowers mayor reputation)
*No loans in debt by that time
    *Do not use god powers
*DO not use cheats of course

Accomplishing the mission will give you my appraisal xD
