Crashes to desktop

So I am playing, I place a cemetary and all the sudden it crashes. But when it goes to desktop, there isn't a "This program has stopped working" message or an error report. But luckily I saved recently and reloaded the city. But about 15 seconds in, same issue. This happened to me about 100 times already with different cities. I just need an answer on how to reduce or stop these frequent crashes.

Avoid running Xfire if you have it or other related programs or chats. Steam can run in the background fine without crashes. Exit Origin as well if you have it.

Also, History 101: SC4 was made during a time when CPU's typically had only 1 or 2 cores at most, and was designed to run with only 1 core running, which is what I find to be true when my game crashes. Normally core 3 runs the game for me. But what can cause crashes in many cases are different cores conflicting with each other to take priority. I know there's a way to only let one core be used when running SC4. But I can't remember it.

But yeah, save often. It's like second nature to me now, I do it impulsively every other minute. Make sure you don't click around to different places too fast or increase/decrease zoom too fast. Particularly if you have a slower PC. Game is more likely to crash with cities on large map tiles.

CTD'S can happen just after your computers monthly updates get installed- i'm on windows vista and its a pain, usally its one of my farms i got off the STEX that does it, but by the next day the crash dosent happen and every thing goes back to normal.

I've come to the conclusion that the game must have a bug that simply shuts it down at random during a session (just to annoy the user?).

Some times i have to start and restart three times before the game gets going- but thats the exception not the rule.

I'm sorry to say that CTD's are just part of playing there's not much you can do about them just 'KEEP CALM and CARRY ON' :)

This is a common problem for several of the reasons cited. However, the main one is wrong version of program. You should have version 1,1,638 at the very least, which shows that the published bug fixes have been applied. If you have a digital download version it will be version 1,1,641 and everything is OK.

If you have a multicore machine, this legacy program should be confined to one core at a time. The command line (target) option -cpucount:1 takes care of this.

If you have a 16:9 display, then you need the -customresolution:enabled -r<width>x<height>x<colour depth> options as well.

On modern machines, these are generally the solutions.

There are 2 updates for Rush Hour/deluxe, 1.1.638 which fixes some issues and 1.1.640 which add night lights. You should at least patch to 1.1.638 for full functionality

Update 638 can be found on sc4devotion , update 640 can be found here

Cheers
