I'm happy now that in the EA footage there are powerlines. I hope there are different kinds, and some that aren't 12 stories tall tho. I hope they also include cell towers, they boost desirability. And catenary wires, along with Northeast corridor styled catenary. What do you guys think?

Cell towers boost desirability? They definitely don't in the UK - most people consider them an eyesore!

I do like the idea though, of cell towers lowering desirability - but companies will pay you to put them around town. A bit like the company deals in previous simcities.

I defiantly agree with squidgeny about the cell phone towers. You can defiantly find some power line mods on the stex though.

Zeldafan, I think you mean "definitely" not "defiantly." But, I agree that having multiple styles of powerlines would be awesome.

Those are for SC4, not the upcoming SC 2013 release. ;)

I agree, variable power lines and cell tower business deals would be great. :)

If you were to go by the two (2) cell towers that got put up on the property adjacent to ours, and then factor in the attendant idiot 'techs' that come out to 'service' them by driving across our property (and, subsequently, lowering the property value by $35k+) you wouldn't think they were so great. From a purely personal standpoint, I'm all for a SimCity without cell towers. If it's going to be an advanced society, shouldn't everyone have satellite phones?

Another cell phone tower

This is a discussion related to SimCity 2013, not the currently released SimCity 4. Those cell towers or for SC4.

The discussion is talking about the possibility of different power lines and cell phone towers for SC2013.

Ouch, that sucks. Although I see your point, I would still like to have the option of them being there, even just as props.Functional would be great, but as the same time users who don't want them would be stuck with no cell coverage in their cities. I suppose they could always make cellphones optional in the game...

I think I would prefer differently. Cell phone towers are kind of specific and could be tied to a scenario or something, but I think it would serve better as custom content for aesthetic value.

As far as power lines are concerned, I think it would be realistic to have two kinds: The ones they have now (which look great!) and smaller poles/lines you might see along a street or highway connecting two or more city areas. Really though, the stock power lines in SC look the best of all the games thus far, in my opinion.

It seems to me, that at least in SC4 mechanics/terms, cell phone towers would increase either approval rating or desirability within a radius corresponding to its range, but decrease land values or desirability by a greater amount within close range. I don't think such a multi-effect is possible in SC4 without giving it radiation but perhaps such could be achieved in the future in SC5.

well, if the powerlines are moddable and not hardcoded like in sc4 i will continue my powerline project into 2013.

i really hope its like this since i already saw the lines didnt look that realistic.. if i'm not mistaken the lines only have 2 wires wich is unrealistic because every circuit exists out of 3 phases. wich can exist into 1 circuit or more.

we'll see what the future brings. i'm glad they still have lines in game. i was kinda worried this wasn't implimented.

Honestly cell towers are just for realism, thats why I would want them. And yes they do need to make realistic power lines, like the steel lattice kind, or power poles, and then the ones along highways for lower voltages.

Well thats an interesting topic you got there.

i assume the game is more orientated towards american cities? because the power distribution in America is somewhat diffrent than in Europe for sample.

but i quess they just stick to basic high voltage lines and the agents do the rest.

Well, they reduce desirability for a block or so. Overall though, decent phone coverage tends to be a slight plus for desirability.

What if they are the incognito kind?

There are also cell phone towers disguised as pine trees, church crosses, and other trees as well as being attached to water towers and landmarks in cognito. I think telecommunications should boost desirability and taxes/profits.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11
