It's that time of year again, Azerbijan won last year so it's Baku and the Crystal Hall this year, which was built in less than a year. The song contest is the largest non-sporting TV event of the year. It is organised and run by the European Broadcasting union.

Azerbijan has a detached part which is seperated from the rest by Armenia. Armenia has not entered this year citing the non-safety of it's contestants and supporters as the reason. Both countries are engaged in a boarder dispute.

As of last night Italy was favorite according to the British bookmakers, although the Russian Grannies seem to be well liked. Jedwood is again the entrant for Ireland whilst the British entrant is Englebert Humperdink. Jamie Cullum is a co-writer of the German entry.

Half the votes are from the public the other half from a jury in each country. Countries cannot vote for their own entries. All countries (25) can vote in the final.

the only thing that helps me maintain my slender grip on reality is the friendship I share with my collection of singing potatoes.
