Technical Advice Wanted:

I have this program (game) that connects itself to the Net everytime I start it. What a hassle! Is there a way to stop it from doing this, or simply forbid the connection through the firwall? I looked around in my windows XP but couln't find anything. Thanks.

the problem is whether it will work if you block the connection. What is the game?

Tropico4, yes it works without the connection, but it always looks for updates and asks me for the freaking password everytime. We don't need it to play. I am disconnecting the wire from the wall, and it works fine. But there are four computers on that line......know what I mean?

    Thanks.

It has been a long time since I looked at Microsoft's firewall, but can't you just put the site on your blacklist?

What happens if you don't give the password? Have you tried hitting escape?

Blacklist? I think that could help, but I have no idea how that functions.

Not giving the password will tell you that you can't play the game and it closes the window. Escape just closes the window and nothing happens after.

There must be a way to stop a program from accessing the Net without pulling out the "Wallplug" everytime.

    Thanks everyone.

^ The blacklist is a list of sites that you will not allow. On my firewall there is both an incoming list and an outgoing list. You can use the URL or the IP address.

....and where may I find the blacklist on my computer? Or, where do I add it? Thanks..

On Windows firewall, you can block individual programs (or let them through), if you so choose.

To be honest, I have been there, and I didn't find anything to block a program. But....I found a list of programs under exceptions, but that specific program wasn't listed. So ?

    Thanks

So add it. This is a rather simple edit. Just hit the add button, and type it in.

Oh,....you mean I have to add the program to the list to have it stop it from accessing the net?

    You're kidding me........lol....

Not sure because it says in the firewall window that the programs listed are the ones that have access and are not denied. All the programs that I have listed in that list have access.

I want to stop to have the program accessing the NET, not the contrary. Thanks anyways.

There are two lists. You are looking at your white list. Those programs have explicit permission. You also have a deny list, at least my firewall does. It has some general settings then some specific include/deny lists which modify the overall permissions.

Well, I think I only got one list, unless there's a hidden button somewhere to reach the other. Windows XP family Edition. So.....I will continue to pull the wallplug to stop the access for the NET. ;)

    Thanks for clearing this.

^ Just checked my firewall (ufw). It has a incoming list which can contain denials, and an outgoing list which can contain specific permission. By default, everything is either way unless I get mad at somebody.

Well, mine doesn't on Win XP family Edition.! That means that I will continue to walk over the whole room, pull out the wallplug for internet connection and then start my game without asking me my e-mail address and password every time. How come those window "Geniuses" didn't think of something like this before.......?

    Thanks there all.
