Whither SimCity 4 Deluxe?

There has been some talk and a lot of implications that SimCity 4 (Deluxe) has become obsolete and an object to be denigrated. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Consider the number of players who still run SC3K, SC2, because they like some of the features. What makes people think that they won't play SC4 after this new version is out?

If there is no solo, off-line version of the new SimCity many have said they won't purchase it. This is a bit knee-jerk IMHO. It may or may not be within your budget to try the new game, but that is the only reason I can think of for not trying it out.

I do not intend to uninstall my version of SC4 no matter what I do with the new game. I do suggest that anyone intending to continue with SC4, even nostalgically, should update to the digital version (1,1,641) and stash it on a backup. This version runs without a "play disk".

Meanwhile, to paraphrase Mark Twain: "The report of the death of SC4 is greatly exaggerated."

That's good input. I install SC4 Deluxe the hard way right now.

I also have a CD with all the released patches and the mods I like to use. I keep the "fixed" exe on there too that lets me start the game without a CD.

That's a huge hassle to get setup on a new computer though. I've often considered buying a digital version to avoid all this hassle. Having paid premium for both SC4 and Rushhour, though, I'm waiting until SC4 Deluxe is on a Super Steam Sale before picking it up.

I had not considered, although it's obvious now, that the digital version would not be need a no CD fix. This information makes owning the digital version even more enticing.

Am I understanding correctly though? If you burn the installed digital version to a CD you can then copy it to any computer, even one not running the digital distribution software, and it will still work? That doesn't seem right, or at least, it doesn't seem like it should be allowed or work.

I guess I'll also echo brynhyfryd's question: Which digital version are you referring to?

No. I got mine from Gamer's Gate. They tell you explicitly how to isolate the installer as well. And you don't need to be on-line to them except to download the actual game installation files, which you can keep. Steam and Origin both give me an acute pain in the lower region.

@Neil5280: The versions available from Amazon and Gamersgate are identical to the ones you get from Steam and Origin. The difference is they don't download a Trojan on you at the same time. I don't know what would happen if those gadgets tried to run on my Linux system. Would probably be killed by my AV software (CLAM-AV).

In short: I get to say what's on my machine, and no one else. I simply don't allow intruders for any reason.

Neil, because I change operating system decor at the drop of a hat, I need the free standing digital version. Installed it on my new version of the Ubuntu 12.04 beta this morning. Took about five minutes. If you burn the directory on a CD or DVD it will become an ISO standard disk. If you know how to mount one of these, you can actually install from it.

Nevermind, it is unique from amazon (seemingly), it even has City Life for $10!

I will pick up the digi version of SC4 from gamersgate as I just got a free copy of Cities in Motion (CIM) with them. I already own the steam version of CIM though.
