I am new to SC4 and when I download certain mods the files show as .dat and not .exe. What folder do should I place these .dat files in so they will work. I am using Windows 7.

    Welcome to simtropolis!

Once all files are extracted with Winzip or WinRar or another

program, the files(.dat,.Lots, Ect)need to then be placed in the

Sim City 4 My documents plugins folder.

Make sure to follow the directions included with a file to install

    it properly.

Just to amplify this a little:

An ordinary lot produced by the Lot Editor gives you a .SC4LOT file.

    A lot produced using the BAT suite of programs produces a .SC4MODEL, .SC4DESC, and a .SC4LOT file\

Sometimes files are combined, especially in a large mod or suite of lots into a series of .DAT files which are the data base format recognised by the game. Some builders use a special program to combine the elements of the .SC4LOT and .SC4DESC file so only a .SC4MODEL and .SC4LOT file appear.

Where multiple .dat files appear, it is essential that you read the instructions carefully as some may be optional and you must pick the right set for your needs.

.DLL files may also appear. If they do, they must be placed in your Plugins folder without a sub-folder.

Of the mentioned file types, all go in the Plugins folder. It is smart to use a sub-folder structure inside the Plugins folder to make maintenance of any updates easier.

Any other files expanded from a download are documentation. Read it, but don't put it in your Plugins.
