There's nothing more annoying than to be pointed "in real life, this sign should be yellow and green, not just yellow".

Building: 1 MB

Dependencies: 30 MB

I never had the opportunity to say my opinion about the dependencies debate, but I guess it's about time.

On the one hand, you have talented creators who want to make really awesome lots. The result is to use a lot of dependencies, in order to customise their creations and make them as flexible as possible. In the end however, the players will complain about "I need to download 30 MB of files just for a 1 MB building". On the other hand, you have creators who take it to the extreme and refuse to use any dependency. The result is to use only Maxis props and textures, in order to keep it simple. In the end however, the players will complain about "too much Maxis stuff, this is boring".

My humble ideas? For the creators, use dependencies only if you really need them. For the players, learn to use the Lot Editor.

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." - Frank Zappa

"The wisest men follow their own direction." - Euripides

^ A further comment on dependencies. It is unacceptable to download a library of hundreds of objects to access a few. Are "megapacks" the right way to go?

    Least favorite: INSTALLERS.

I like to organize my plugins folder by building/mod type, and installers add several steps to it. You have to unzip it, choose a folder, agree to the terms & conditions, close the readme, reassure Windows 7 that the plugin did indeed install correctly, hit back, delete the installer folder, then try to find the building in the new folder maze the installer created, open a second window with the folder you want to drop the building into, then finally put the building where you want.

Not to mention that sometimes, I’ll unzip the folder, then have someone call me, and I’ll forget to install the plugin before I start the game next, so I’ll have a few megs of dead weight slowing my game down.

Or I’ll install a 10 MB dependency pack, forget to delete the folder, see it a few days later and think I never installed it, and end up installing it again if I forget to run a search for the filename first. Also, this might be why I have menu duplicates of a few buildings.

I see how they’re necessary for complicated addon mods like the NAM, where you have to choose which features you want installed, left or right hand drive compatibility, and so on. But is there really any reason we need them for one 2x2 building with no dependencies?

(Well, I’m pretty sure SC4Devotion enforces it, but why?)

Right now, I have about 20 buildings to install in a row. Grah. Urgh. Ack.

I probably will rearrange my plugins folder to make it easier on myself soon.

    Anyway...

^ that can be fun and frustrating. My current mode consists of making small towns with special reference to seaports. This too, has its drawbacks, but it remains fun.
