There seemed to be an unholy lack of any sort of thread for this...so...here we are, a thread for this. HUZZAH!

First off, I would like to know how one goes about setting up a seminar without goofing up drastically. So, seminar team dudes, I ask you. How?

Also, I would like to hear people's opinions on what they would like to see in a seminar. Like just for example here, "I want to see a seminar on how to use the lot editor efficiently" or "I want to see a seminar on what makes a good mod"

_________________________________________________________

Seminars to date:

Feb 6, 2012

Topic: The seminar will feature a brand new technique for zones facing
NAM
GLR
puzzle pieces, among other topics (see below in the additional information for the other topics).

Feb 11, 2012

Topic: The
RHW
, cosmetic pieces and a new take on pedmalls!

Feb 18, 2012

Alex (Tarkus) from the
NAM
Team will host and mrtnrln will host the seminar. Join us as we discuss the The Future of the
RHW
! He'll show some of the inner workings of Project 57 (previously known as Project 0E), RUL coding, brand new content, and there may be some time for some teasers. Come one, come all! You don't want to miss this!

(this one kinda lacked a topic subheader....)

OK, what you should do when you host a seminar:

1. You need a time and date to held your seminar on. This will be discussed between the yet informal Seminar Team (either b22rian or me (mrtnrln)) and the host. (but often, this will be no problem). When an agreement is made, it's the host responsibility to show up in time, so choose your planned time wisely.

2. You require a subject to talk about. Be sure it will be enough to talk about, but not too much, so you wouldn't talk for hours. You can estimate that one page of text will take about 8-10 minutes to complete. Preperation is essential for a successfull presentation. I'd recommend to get a script and some pictures/slideshow ready for your seminar.

3. If you want to, you can co-host the seminar with someone else. This should also be planned.

We can help you through the process if you need to. Hope this helps!

Best,

Maarten

Oh! I didn't know about the Feb. 18th one with Alex. I will not miss that.

EDIT: I think a seminar on what makes a good CJ would help a lot of new CJ'ers on ST. It could include helpful 'hints' about how to create a successful CJ, like using less Maxis, get rid of repetition, etc. I'd be willing to help organize this if needed.

How to host a seminar?

Choose your subject

Your subject can be anything (prefeably) SimCity 4 related. You may want to held one about how to install maps, or how to make your city look better. The point is that your subject shouldn't take too long (or too short) to cover. The prefered time span is between 20 and 60 minutes.

However, the following subjects will NOT be covered:

  • City showcases; that's where CJs are for.
  • BAT showcases; that's where BAT threads are for.
  • Anything that disobeys chat and site rules.

Presentation format
As a host, you need to present your subject in a clear and structured way. It's helpfull to have a format. You may choose one of the following formats or come up with one of your own:
  • Text presentation and some pictures
  • Text presentation and a slideshow
  • Audio presentation (prefeably also subtitled) and slideshow/pictures
  • Audio presentation (prefeably also subtitled) and video clips.

You also might want to write a script. It's easier to have some text ready where you can read from to do your audio presentation, or you can simply copy-paste the into the chat during the seminar.

Time planning

Once you have a subject, you need to plan a date and time. Here's some advice about the time and date:

  • Try to host the seminars in the weekends (saturday or sunday). This will give you the maximum amount of potential public.
  • Since we all live in different time zones, not all times of the day will match. But most people are active during 21:00-00:00 GMT. You can also decide to do two seminars during the same day to reach people in their corresponding time zones on a more appropriate time.

If you're interested in hosting a seminar, please contact either me or b22rian on the Chat, or post your participation proposal below.

Best,

Maarten

There are plans to create a mapping seminar on Saturday, March the 10th (March 11th in the Australia region).

The times are planned for 9PM GMT

The speakers will be Samerton, Bigro and Paulobergonci.

The planned topics will cover:

Installing SC4Terraformer on Windows 7

Creating your first map on SC4Terraformer.

As I say, these are only plans for a seminar so it is not 100% definite.

Yes, just goes to show that it doesn't really need to be related to sc4, just needs to be relevant and/or interesting :P
