Hopefully they will find a practical method for synthesizing the new molecule. If it turns out that this molecule does offer capabilities as an explosive, it would be awesome if they could find a means to moderate the energy release.

You know it was a random selection of modeling components. The principle of serendipity is in full operation. Her teacher has a friend who is a researcher. He had a cell phone, and sent a picture, and the rest was interesting enough to get a paper published. Now if this inspires some synthetic chemist, away we go. Otherwise, it is the library archives for this.

I applaud the teacher. I applaud the little girl, who in a Montessori school is probably in one of the best places for developing curiosity in young children. And I applaud the parents who not only can afford a private school, but also cared enough to send their child to the very best.

Look on the bright side. Instead of explosive decomposition, it might be possible to get a controlled reaction to convert chemical energy into something like steam which could drive a turbine to make electricity. Not all things that look like gun cotton have to be used in cartridges. Let us beat our molecules into power sources.
