Canals and Power

This is my first time using any mods.

I am using the popular NAM mod for Sim City 4 and am trying to build canals. I select the straight-boat option and click, but all I get is a little blue square that doesn't seem to do anything. Did I install it wrong? Also, how do I make a successful canal? (Ports, stops, etc.)

On a side note, has anyone noticed that trying to view the "Zones" mode while NAM is installed barely changes anything? Buildings and trees are still visible and kinda annoying for building.

And finally: I'm trying to sell power to a neighboring city, but no matter how much I generate, the option is never available. I have power lines, roads, and water pipes connecting us (I'm already selling water and importing garbage) and my current usage is at about 60%. Is there another limitation I don't know about? Thanks!

    Welcome to Simtropolis...

The only canal pieces included in NAM are the transit sections - which act as the center of the canals. To get the sections that will allow you to create a full canal, you'll need to get either Simgoobers's set or Cal's, depending on the texture you installed with NAM. You'll also need a terminal set (such as this) to act as stops along the canal.

On a side note, has anyone noticed that trying to view the "Zones" mode while NAM is installed barely changes anything? Buildings and trees are still visible and kinda annoying for building.

Yes, that is by design. A few of the views were altered to make item placement easier. If I remember correctly, you can remove the file name Zone_Data_View from the NAM folder to remove the effect. You could also use the Traffic Simulator tool (available here if you didn't install it with the NAM) to select the view files you want.

And finally: I'm trying to sell power to a neighboring city, but no matter how much I generate, the option is never available. I have power lines, roads, and water pipes connecting us (I'm already selling water and importing garbage) and my current usage is at about 60%. Is there another limitation I don't know about? The producing city needs to produce enough for its own use plus enough to provide to the neighbor. Sometimes. it's a matter of going back and forth between the cities.
