Internet Speed

The first university I attended was Queen's University at Kingston, Ontario. All the buildings were named. The Internet was a pipe dream called DARPAnet in the late 1950s. I don't remember the names of many of the buildings because they were mostly known by function. At that time most of the buildings were limestone block made from the local bluish limestone and quite pretty. Modern construction and Bauhaus were just starting to rear their ugly head. The one building I know for sure was Ontario Hall (the Physics Building). The only Bauhaus building on campus at that time was the "New Mechanical Engineering Building" that I think was named after a deceased professor of ME. For me, at least, lettering buildings is a bust. When I attended the University of Toronto a few years later, the building I had my classes in was called "New College". It was the first new building on the campus for many years. The big medical research facility was called the Connaught Laboratories, which many may have heard about. Insulin was developed there by Banting and Best. It no longer exists. Recently the old insulin research papers were resurrected and added to the museum in the university which now contains the desks and benches of the old labs as well which were, thank heavens, in storage.

All of the schools that I attended or worked in after 1965 seems to be network aware. When I worked at the University of Waterloo in the late 1970s, the Internet did not exist, but was coming of age. It was still called ARPAnet, but there were other nets, notably NetNorth, and BitNet. I think in the end it all became one Internet, except for MilNet which is the U.S. Military network that I think remains separate. In those days a 10base2 (10MHz) net was the hot item and 10BaseT (telephone lines) were just coming into existence.

My current Internet connection is 100base2 (that is, 100MHz, on cable).

We've come a long way, baby.

I have a question, is broadband really broadband when dialup is faster? Youtube videos are constantly loading around 2 kilobits per second lately. Webpages and pictures are fine, though I suspect my ISP is targeting Youtube for bandwidth throttling.

There are two ends in any transmission. It may seem your ISP is doing that, but remember the server at the other end is probably very busy. Youtube gets thousands of hits per minute and the slow response could be their servers. Ask your ISP if they are doing that.

I have found that updating my O/S sometimes runs very quickly and at other times is quite slow. When a major update has been released I suspect the servers at the other end (University of Waterloo) are very busy as well. I know that system quite well and it was never the policy when I was there to throttle anything.

Bright House I'm getting upset with, mainly due to the fact they refuse to get fiber, resulting in slower than normal speeds like this:

Upload is fine (2mbps), but I should be getting around 20-30mbps download according to the Bright House Networks plan I'm on.

That was my first run, later ones had lower upload speeds.

I feel a university connection to a server likely within walking distance is almost cheating, though.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I can't complain as I get what I pay for: 8 Mb/s down and 0.4 Mb/s up. It doesn't matter the time of day, even at peak hours I get my advertised speed.

Supposed to get up to 28 down 1 up, so it's pretty accurate.

    $62 a month.

I pay about $12 for this:

Not too bad, though I wish I had a better connection. It's stable, though, which is what's important.

To LA, pretty good, sub-200ms ping to the US from Australia is considered very good.

    1980083282.png

    To New York...

    1980086287.png

Seems that I lose about 50ms from travelling from LA to NY (which is the way the cable goes).

[edit] needed to fix first image link

Not too bad I don't think although my ping can be ridiculously high sometimes.

I have some friends I play Minecraft with in DC.

And then for a laugh I tested for London too see how crappy my connection is to the UK.

Then I looked and tested on this.

All the tests were done mid afternoon.

$45 a month for unlimited bandwidth in Canada, its not bad really. Still faster than 50% of the country.

    I'm happy with it.

But it fluctuates a lot, last week I had only 10 for a few hours, and then it went back up to 30.
