Why won't my SimCity 3000:Unlimited play twice?

Hi! I have a Dell Inspirion 1545 with a Celeron Dual-Core CPU. My RAM is 3.00GB. I downloaded my SimCity 3000:Unlimited onto my computer last night, and played for a couple of hours (I love this game!), but today it won't load! I get all the way to the very first menu, where you can start a new city, load a current city, etc, but it won't let me click on any of them. I have to start task manager and close it out that way. Is there anything I can do, or what am I doing wrong? It's worth mentioning that before I get to that menu, my computer (which runs on Windows 7) pops a window and asks if I will allow an update to install... Whether I close out of the window, allow, or deny this update, the result of an unresponsive opening menu remains.

It could be a compatibility issue, DRM, or malware.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Is there anything I can do to fix it?

You could try running in compatibility mode. Right click the icon and choose troubleshoot compatibility. If you go through the steps you can choose to run in compatibility mode. I have Windows 7 and SC3k runs fine on my laptop. But it is an old game, I bought it for 5 dollars. You might not be able to play it :( .

I ran into this earlier as well.  I believe the issue is related to the auto-updater included with the game and it locks the game up if it can't talk to the servers (which are probably now offline).

I think I got around this issue by setting "Compatibility Mode" to "Windows 98/ME".
