Freight trips

I recently had a few industrial buildings closing down due to freight trips being too long.

Exactly where is the freight going to? Commercial areas?

The freight needs to get out of the city. As long as it can get to the edge of the city the simulator assumes it got to where it was going successfully.

To acheive this, and reduce freight trip times you can:
- build your industry close to the edge of the map with roads connecting to other cities
- build your industry next to highways or railways that connect to other cities (with suitable on ramps and freight stations)
- put in a seaport

You can use the route query tool to see the routes the freight is trying to take to get out of the city, and make improvements from there.

Freight also always tends to go to the nearest destination as the crow flies, even if the actual path to get there is long and convulted, this often makes industry more reluctant to use rail than it should be (it'll prefer a nearer road connection to a slightly more distant rail connection, eve if travel-time wise the rail connection is twice as fast).

Also industry with NO freight connection will show long freight trips.

1) Best to build Ind. Zone near edge with a many road/highway/road connection OR
2) Build Ind. Zone anywhere near water(so goods can go to the seaport)

Goods always go out, they do not go neither to commerce, nor to residents.
But my industries tend to use rather seaports(in-land rather roads even with big rail system)

I find this highly questionable that the game does this, considering the fact how Freight works. Freight can actually use a network with a zero speed & zero network capacity, so long as the paths are there. So how it is able to calculate times at all, well goodness only knows. Another one of those easter eggs maxis decided to give us 47.gif.

Seaports seem to be the best bet, except that the capacity of them seem to run out so fast in hi-density industrial. Just wondering, if you create a small lake in the middle of your city and plop a seaport in it, will it function even though the ships would be not going anywhere?

One way to ensure that rail gets used is to either not have any other connections to other cities (roads or highways) or, if that is not practical, download and install the NO TRUCKS road lots from the STEX.  It prevents trucks from crossing so freight must go by rail or seaport.  It works well for me although your mileage may vary.

Use all transits to get the freight out of the city, even to an unincorporated city, and outer space.  Makes no difference which transit gets it there, as long as it is short.

More likely the air and water pollution is the cause, if it is abandonment, high tech won't tolerate pollution, or land fills.

Really all you need to do is make sure that the fright can get to the edge of the map or to a sea port in short time, after that it disappeares. Where it goes is left to your imagination.
