National Emergency Tests?

Well, I recently was intrigued to learn that the US will test its National Emergency System for the first time Wednesday at 2 PM Eastern Time.

It gets a little more odd, actually. Also on the same day, the UN will test its Pacific-wide tsunami and communication exercise.

This could also be coincidence, but I thought it was really intersting. An asteroid will closely pass Earth at about 6:28 PM Eastern time tomorrow evening. This will be the closest to Earth since 1976, however it will be about 200,000 miles away.

EDIT: However, after watching this Youtube video that someone linked me, the UN tsunami test made a bit more sense. If you pause the video at 1:40, you'll know why. After that point, the video goes on to link the UN test and the asteroid together.

Here is the video at 1:40 in case you are just interested in that part:

But do you guys think there is a link between these events? Could there be a link to the US test and the recent natural disasters and political turmoil in the US, the Middle East, and the rest of the world? Or is all just simply coincidence?

Very interesting dates!

As part of our ongoing efforts to keep our country and communities safe during emergencies...

That scared me a little. I thought for some reason we were being invaded or bombed. I think I'm playing too much Call of Duty.

I do believe our leaders are doing something, though. It is all the drama in the movies about the government hiding things from us. This is just like the 7 Billion People in the World thread. People are starting to think World War III is coming soon. Related to that sentence-MW3 Comes out tomorrow!

I will watch that video...

Well, I recently was intrigued to learn that the US will test its National Emergency System for the first time Wednesday at 2 PM Eastern Time.

They used to do this all the time when I was a kid. On tv, there would be a high beeping noise, words scrolling across the screen, and we would hear "This is a test of the emergency broadcast system. This is only a test. Had this been an actual emergency you would have been directed to . . . " I forget the rest of it. It happened so often I tuned it out.

The tsunami thing is new

Inside the orbit of the moon. It will be closer to earth than the moon gets.

The moon causes tides. Who knows what this thing will do?

Oh, yes I have heard of that! :) But this leads me to think this is in some way different, or is it just all jazzed up for nowadays?

Yes, it's impossible to predict, really. Also, that's a great point you bring up. We'll just have to hunker down and wait and see. :P

Until shown otherwise, I'm going with "all jazzed up for nowadays".

Well, it's happened before without drastic consequences. But I think that speed, trajectory, angle of approach, etc would have something to do with it. I'll leave that to someone who actually knows something about astrophysics.

We actually got a real emergency broadcast, a statewide amber alert on Halloween.

Yes and no. Several years ago, companies that make communications gear for emergency responders came out with significantly improved gear that allowed the emergency response groups useful capabilities that they had never had before. Problem was, it required portions of the electromagnetic spectrum that was reserved for things like television broadcasts, so the emergency response groups could never deploy the new gear to any measurable effect. The major reason for forcing the switch to all digital broadcasts was to clear up that band of the electromagnetic spectrum so emergency responders could deploy the new gear. So, in effect, the national emergency broadcast system is a jazzed up version of what we had before, but at the same time, it isn't, because it is being built on somewhat different technology than the older systems were built on, with added capabilities that never used to be possible.

Christ, don't be worried about the rock. Its not going to crash into the earth. Simple as that. Its not. no "not likely", just "not". Its not going to have an effect on the earth either. Its mass is tiny, compared to any other force acting on the earth.

    Non event.

So? Someone woke up and decided that since they are spending all this loot on the NES, maybe we should see if it works.

Well, I guess it makes some sense to synchronise these things.

This could also be coincidence, but I thought it was really intersting. An asteroid will closely pass Earth at about 6:28 PM Eastern time tomorrow evening. This will be the closest to Earth since 1976, however it will be about 200,000 miles away.

    *raises hand*

Absolutely nothing within the limits of detectability. The asteroid is about 400 m across. The moon is almost 3,500 km across. The moon also orbits at about 240,000 miles, so there really isn't that much difference between how far away the two are.

Assuming the asteroid and the moon have the same density, the asteroid has a mass about 100,000,000,000 (100 billion) times less than that of the moon. Since gravitational force is proportional to mass, it exerts a force on the oceans roughly 100 billion times less than the moon does. So its effect will be 100 billion times less. The highest tides in the world occur at Burncoat Head in Nova Scotia, where the difference between high and low tide is 16.27 m. The asteroid will change this by about 200 picometres, on the scale of the radius of an atom.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Ok, you're right. I exaggerate a little. Sorry. The argument of Astronelson is totally true, a rock of that kind will not make tides as the Moon does, that's obviously.

Maybe the map with the big red X is a Worst Case Scenario, a What If...?, surely there are another maps of this kind.

I've downloaded the file 11133.kml and there is a layout with the X called 11133.jpg over Bering Sea, and four folders that suppose to connect to somewhere but there is nothing. But, I see the same X over China and Russia when I activate the Weather layout.

I don't know, and as far as I know a layout with that X means lost file. I really finish disgusted about the conspiracy theory after the AH1N1 epidemy.

So, maybe sure tomorrow will be another day for the world, there will be that emergency tests and the rock will pass unnoticed and the life will continue.

I wonder why we are not "practicing" on this one since its so close. besides that we dont have the money or will to try our hands at adjusting this rock to say hit the sun or venus in a few years.

eventualy there IS going to be a rock we need to move.

If we ever have to change the orbit of an asteroid, doing so when its next to the earth is porbablhy unlikely situation. Its much more likely that we would attempt to adjust its orbit when it is furtherest from the sun, as there is a smaller velocity change required. We're getting plenty of practice at moving to asteroids aswell, for example with the dawn mission.
