New to Simtropolis, Have a Few Questions

Hey guys, I just bought a copy of Sim City 4 the other day for $5. Thought it'd be fun to play around with even though it's 8 years old. Ideally, what I'd like to do is download entire versions of my favorite cities: Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York City, and Toronto. I'd like to then just goof around with the pre-made cities. I'm not even sure if this is possible. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks guys.

Welcome to Simtropolis...

You could try searching the STEX for undeveloped maps of the cities. However, you won't find any uploaded pre-built cities. Site rules prohibit the uploading of developed cities due to the large size of the files involved and the fact that not everyone would necessarily have the same content in their plugins that was used to make the cities.

Yeh no im sorry to say man. Captcity is exactly right with the devoloped cites or maps rather part of your question. Though you can check out the omnibus for more info on making your own maps or just rendering and using downloaded (empty) maps :).

hope that helps!

btw: add me while your at it ;P

Welcome to Simtropolis!

As CaptCity and Halenbyname have clarified, maps of pre-built cities (maps with cities already built on them) are prohibited because the size of the files and because many SimCity 4 players on this site have downloaded mods and custom content, so if you downloaded a map with a pre-built city, you would have to find all of that person's downloads, as well. If you'd like more info on maps, and downloads, check out the Omnibus; and I highly reccomend you also take a look at this article.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated. I guess one way or another I'll have to put considerable time into this. Should be fun though. I'll definitely look into the Omnibus!

You are welcome and allow me to add my personal warm welcome from the frozen north.

A couple of things to be aware of:

If you did not download your game from a responsible dealer your game is probably incomplete. There are three disk-packaged versions of the game out there:

    1. SimCity 4 the original or vanilla. This needs one patch from the new site
    2. SimCity 4 Rush Hour which needs the vanilla package because it is an expansion pack. If you are playing, you don't have that only.
    3. SimCity 4 Deluxe which is the two above combined. If you have it on disk, there are two published patches on the site.
You can find out what you have by looking at the version number of the executable in your Program Files folder under

    C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 [Deluxe]\Apps\SimCity 4.exe

If you have a different structure, you should adjust accordingly, but find the .exe.

if you are on Windows 7, just hover your mouse over the file. The version you should see is 1,1,640,0 or 1,1,641,0. Both of these are fully patched and up to date. You will see 641 if you got the game on-line.

You need the fully patched game to use most of the custom content found on the STEX (here) and elsewhere.

Do not, under any circumstances, download anything from the exchange on the EA site. It is heavily plagiarized and full of viruses. Use only monitored and supported exchanges.

If we can help you in any way, do not be afraid to ask. You might want to take a look at the index to see where to post any new queries.

I bought the original two-disc version on PC-CD from the store for $5. I probably need those patches.
