I'm trying to get sims to commute between cities. They used to commute until I disconnected them and I've reconnected them they should begin commuting again right?

Here are some stats for the cities I'm trying to get sims to commute between:

Boone (City 1)

Time:11/24/03

Population 21,846

Commercial:11,704

Industrial:56,896

Homes are going abandoned in Boone

Ames (City 2)

1/22/04

Population 29,926

Commercial:36,373

Industrial:24,861

A boomtown with potential for more population

The 2 cities are connected by 2 Avenues and 2 Roads.

Not necessarily; Ames may have become self sufficient in the mean time.

Also, are you using the NAM traffic simulator?

Ames has become more self sufficient which was my goal, but now I need it to be a metropolitan center.

I am using NAM traffic simulator.

Try creating more jobs where you want the Sims to go. You may also have to beef up the residential in the other city.

I'm trying to understand how would beefing up residential in Boone would help if there are already abandoned homes in that city? Ames already has enough jobs for Boone residents to commute to, should I put more jobs in Ames (i.e. Airport) on the edge of the map?

Please note I said you "may have to". This is conditional voice which means it is a suggestion in case of need. Just add more jobs where you want the commuters to go. As for the abandoned homes, don't put any more residential in the Airport city, but increase the jobs so that there are not enough local residents. Your abandoned homes are probably due to Sims moving to the next city, so you could try doing something attractive in the other town. Add some parks and playgrounds. You can get a temporary refresh on the attractiveness of abandoned properties by painting them with mayor or god mode trees.
