Ferries ?

Up until now I've never used the ferries. You know what it's like, why build some boring ferry terminals when you can have some stunning looking bridges crossing your waterways.

So before I dive headlong into the digging and levelling tools, some questions.

Knowing the sims are always looking for the fastest routes to their destinations, how likely are they to use my new ferry systems when they could use a road or rail bridge a couple of miles down the road ?

I realise that's going to depend on how far the road or ferry is from their destination, but if they are of similar distances which, which is quicker ?

Also, if I've got two neighbouring cities without rivers running through them (ie no use for ferries) but a single stretch of coastline, and I plop a single ferry terminal in both, will they use the said ferries to commute between the two cities ? And if the answer to that is no, is there anyway of using the sea as a way of commuting the sims between cities ?

Any insight into the above questions will be much appreciated, before I send the dozers in and smash through some nice little riverside communities.

You will discover that ferries are to roads as worm holes are to space ships. Ferries between different cities act immediately it seems.

Ferries easily give rise to the dreaded commuter loop. You have to be very careful with them.
