Why not use all horizontal land first? I really don't believe in green cities.

First, without high industry demand (specially without/few cars)the tendency its reduce the consumerism. REducing the consumerism, we reduce the industries.

With few industries, i don't think we need all live in cities, we can live in small communities, jsut one or two light indsutrial center will be suficient to all.

I don't remember the author, but once a time i read something similar sec XIX professor said in sec XX industries gonna work just 2 hours and will produce the suficient to all population.

What is you opinion about green cities?

IMHO if the human species is to last longer than the dinosaurs, we need to incorporate 'green' into everything we do.

Have you noticed that in a natural ecosystem there is no such thing as 'waste/garbage? Think about it.. the systems that are naturally in place do not allow for waste, everything is used in one manner or another to contribute TO the health of the environment/system... instead of the destruction of habitat/ ecology the human species has wrought.

It's hard to believe but there are many societies around the world that did not even have a word for garbage until the late 20th /early 21st century! 6.gif

When we quit having a 'waste/garbage' problem, we will be a lot closer to being 'green'.

.. one Very Crazy Woman's opinion... 9.gif

This is the future i want to see, either for myself, or for my kids or grandkids. The idea of combining technology with nature is just overwhelming, and NEEDS to happen!

I'm the 'A' to the 'r', to the c-h-e-a-n,
and even though my name means 'old' I'm really quite pimp,
I'm Archilicious.

I think it is a great alternative. It has one problem though.

It costs too much. Especially in these times of governments loaning billions to finance their standard responsibilities, companies going bankrupt etc.

Talking about a green city is talking about making a city from the ground up or demolish a city completely and rebuild it to make it 'green'.

I think we have to have a goal which is realistic to achieve first. So looking for alternative fuels, getting a green power-supply, recycling the most we can and increase the usage of public transport. If we have managed that (that will probably be in 2050 or maybe later) we can think about making a city completely harmless for the environment.

I hope it will come one day but I think that I will be dead when the 'green city' is a new standard.

I sort of feel like the MadMax-style future is more likely than this... unfortunately

I saw in a swedish science magazine a few weeks ago that we only have 10 years to reduce pollution or a large amount of corals and other organism would die in the Great Barrier Reef. Many species would also move, but would not be able to sustain in other areas. If someone knows more about the subject than me, feel free to correct me.

But, this is probably a future we have to face, since it will take alot more for companies to care more about the enviroment than profits. This is also why i am very interested in astronomy and hope to get a job in this region when i grow up, because i feel that that fate of humanity depends on developing technology to travel and colonize other planets.

But, our first step is of course reducing pollution with a greener lifestyle. However, as the rest of you already mentioned, it will cost massive amounts of money. Although i believe that it is necessary, because the future of humanity and the planet is way more important than profit and money.
