Grokking the GIMP is the tutorial book, available in HTML, SGML, PDF free on line and in your technical book store for money. Grok is a verb meaning 'deeply understand' coined by Robert A Heinlein in Stranger in a Strange Land.

GAP is the animation plugin and may be optionally downloaded.

I've always had the animation package, so I don't know if you can make animated GIFs without it. If so, fine. With it, I think you can do some neater CGI stuff. This is a very powerful package. The GTK+ 2.0 package used to create some Linux desk tops for Xorg is basically jumped up GIMP.
