Portal 2

So I was recently given Portal 2 (PS3) as a gift. I must say that it's rather awesome. I appreciate the fact that it's a high-end first-person game with a lot of time and money into it that doesn't involve blowing peoples heads off left and right. My thoughts are that it would not have been possible without Mirror's Edge, another blockbuster game that didn't focus on severe violence. I was wondering if anybody else had any ideas to it's beginnings or if anybody knows of any equal-quality non-shooter, non-RPG type games. Clearly you have the strategy genre, which I love, but they're not first-person. I'd really appreciate seeing more non-violent, creative first person games. Thoughts, anybody?

The original portal was released just over a year before Mirrors Edge came out, so maybe its the other way around. But I do see how your making the connection, both equally good games that seem to have taken a lot of influence from each others own unique style.

I found this site, discusses briefly what the developers were doing before portal. Not valve, but the team that was bought by valve and worked on portal.

I can't think of anything else thats non-violent and FPS style, unless you want to count minecraft...

My first thought was Uncharted, but thats third person and a shooter, equally as good though.

I'd like to see something else like this too, however its just easier to put in guns and make people run around killing things than it is to make some sophisticated simulations or something more creative than the 'run of the mill' game.

Have you noticed that with the PS3 copy you are able to download portal 2 onto your computer for free? I thought that was a nice little feature, and very useful too.

Yet i have an xbox :(

Still bought it for PC tho. This game is insane, it was short, but then again i completed the first one in 1hr 10 first time round. But it is a great refresher from CoD and such, shows that awesome games can be made that dont require shooting terrorists and world wars.

I got it a while ago for the PC. All around good game. Gameplay is of course wonderful, but is also has an entertaining story. You finally know more about Aperture Labs and where it is located, and that it exists in the same universe as the Half-Life series(this is only an easter egg, nothing from half-life ever features in the gameplay)

The final boss fight is hysterical, I won't spoil it by saying what happens exactly that makes you laugh, just that it's awesome. Also, lemons. Hell, you should play the game just for the dialogue sound bites...

You found out it was in the half life universe in portal 1, in the ending credits. Also in the ending scene i think.

Yeah I guess your right. Sorry. Honestly, I played Portal 1 before Half Life... didn't get exposed to it before I bought the Orange box compilation pack.

Did anyone else find the Borealis dry dock? I got stuck in that one area and wandered around so much I found quite a number of easter eggs.
