Three "500 Internal Server Error" messages in the last 15 minutes. Is there something not understood about the apache server?

Maybe the request queue is not set up properly. Rememeber that queue indices in C programs start at 0 and if the queue length is n, then the last cell is queue[n-1]. If a circular queue gets to the final index and you have to insert, the insertion must be at [0], but only if it is emptied, otherwise you have a critical section wait. Perhaps this section needs review. Don't be chintzy with queue sizes, memory is cheap.

At around 0900 this morning, I got a 500 error and on the retry got a maintenance message. Would have been better if I had got the maintenance message first.

I am beginning to think that this system cannot survive a long idle period. I believe most users are on this continent and that the system goes idle when the Pacific time zone goes to bed and stays idle until the Eastern zone (usually me) tries to get on.

If there is a maintenance schedule in there, how about sharing it with the membership?

Got a new one a few minutes ago. "Server busy or overloaded"???? That is probably not enough bandwidth or a DOS attack.

I thought that was a custom HTTP 500 error reworded.

Probably. The feelings are warmer anyway.

Anyone know what the bandwidth of the server is? Xeon processors shouldn't be having this kind of thing.

I can't believe that the lion is really busy. We don't have enough active members for that.

    Not for me.

I am now unable to access the site on Google Chrome. Every page I try to load on ST I get this message after 5 min. of waiting:

    Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.

Apache Server at simtropolis.com Port 80

I am able to access it on all the other browsers however, but it is very slow.

It has slowed down a little now that there are probably more users on.

A lot of people are having trouble with Chrome. I tried it, and hated it. Maybe you should stop beating your head against the wall and stay with Firefox. It may be huge, but it works, and that's what virtual memory is for. What ever gave you the idea that the programmers at Google are any great hell?

Well, at least the messages are custom now.

111222333444, why are you using Opera? and Chrome for that matter? New/oddball is not better than community developed.

If you are any kind of a programmer, you can write your own in Visual Studio. There is even a browser control.

    Positioning problems persist.

The new facility to take one to the last unread post is very nice but if there are many images in the thread, it misses and leaves you in some undetermined place. One should think that since you have the reference to the image you could access it and find out how many pixels it is vertically. Yes, I know this would slow down the response but most threads don't have images. However, it is only a matter of addition, eh?

If anything has been added to a thread since you viewed it, there is a small down button to the left of the title.

Keep getting a server busy message, must have had it 10 times in the past half hour. It happened when I was trying to create a new CJ, so I refreshed it and now it has created two, however when I try to delete the duplicate entry I get the server busy message every time.

I can't believe that KBS News (from Korea) loaded faster than ST... KBS News is always the slower site...

I have 10 Server errors today + slowdowns

I wonder if there is something to do with the net traffic since the server is deep in the heart of Texas. The number of hops and intermediate servers might have a lot to do with the failures.

I just got an update to Firefox that is currently hanging fire. Today has been trouble free so far. If I don't post anything after this today, the new update didn't affect things.

Still can't acess with Chrome or Firefox (upgraded to 6.0.2 as well). The site seems to be super fast in IE9 though, is it optimized for it?

Strange. I am runningFF6.0.2 and it runs like a watch. Since this is a new server and program it might be IE optimized but ST6.0 was optimized for FF.

Ga-roww-wl. Far too many 500 errors. Bandwidth or too many hops problem?

I haven't gotten a 500 error for a while now; it's these stupid "The server is over capacity" and "Bad Request" errors. IE is still the only browser that I can access ST on and have it actually load pages without taking 5 minutes. I can access in FF sometimes but it is very slow.

The messages have been customized, but they are still the same old guff. For example the "Whoa there" message is a 500. If is just friendlier than the rather sterile, programmer oriented errors from the default server. Warm feelings are OK, I suppose. The message number shows in your tab.

I am beginning to think there is trouble on the net with not enough general bandwidth somewhere or too many hops that cause trouble.

I've logged in from the Beta release of UBUNTU 11.10 which is due out at the end of October. Interestingly enough, the default browser is Firefox 7.0 which seem somewhat faster than my standard version 6.0.2 on UBUNTU 11.04 where I normally run.

So far no problems, but the response seems a little slow.

The revised decor on this desktop gives me a little more space which I like. Just got the new release up, so I have no other opinion other than this site runs well.

Only one 500 today for me, but a bit slow (7.43s, homepage, 20:20BST).

@A Nonny Moose: I have never had any noticeable speed difference from any browser update or between any browser, I have on different OS's though. I have used Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, IE, Iceweasel & Epiphany; on XP, Vista, Chrome, Ubuntu, Debian & BackTrack.
