Seems rather pointless from a consumer perspective, but seems EA sees alot of potentinal in the moble phone market, Still i think its not enough to justify the ammount of money spent on the acquisition.

I wouldn't shoot fast here cowboy. Not just that PopCap isn't focussed on games for mobile phones only (rather on causal games in gerneral), but that platform especially smart phones, are a fast growing gaming sector with lots of cashflow and therefore good earning opportunity if done correctly. Consider this, according to wikipedia:

Gameloft, one of the biggest names in this sector, had revenue growths of at least +10% per fiscal year since 2007. in fiscal 2009, it stood at 120million euros, for q1-3 of fiscal 2010 it stood at 101 million, still missing information for q4 but I guess it will at least break even with fiscal 2009.

plus 2009 employee figures state over 4000 of which over 3500 are developpers.

Now that's just one big name on the market.

You see, there's plenty of justification for EA taking more and more ground in the mobile/casual gaming market.

There is money to be made here. How ever knowing EA they will destroy this like they have with everything else they touch.

EA makes profitable games. Crysis has been a popular game, SimCity 4 has been a popular game, The Sims Franchise was always a cash cow, Far Cry is popular, et cetera. EA owns Playfish games and Playfish games makes the most popular restaurant facebook game there is, Restaurant City. EA Sports is a popular franchise.

EA will not stop making blockbusters until the vast majority of gamers come to see everything they make as utter rubbish and that will not happen in the next couple of years.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

I've played Bejeweled, but I don't know of any other PopCap games that I've played. Anyway, they were bought by EA? That doesn't sound too good, though I have a bit of respect for EA games. They're not that bad.
