Bruce, it can't hurt to reinstall, but make sure you have a backup of your regions and plugins just in case they get scragged during the reload.

Thanks!!...I can do that, if I re-install, I'll just move my regions and plugins to D drive, and then back again. Another thought, due to the fact that I'm using several mods, do those need to be re-installed or just by being in my plugins folder, will they interface fine?

An additional problem with laptops is they can overheat and cut out. This program runs the CPU at 100% for extended periods, which causes more heat than the plenum in the laptop can properly dissipate.

...Thanks for the reminder ANM!!....I forgot that there is quite a demand on the CPU when running SimCity, and lately I have been running apps behind my gaming! That is most likely why I have seen some spikes in the CTD frequency!

Next time I'm in the game, I'll not run anything in the background and see how that helps...

No problem, Bruce. The best vehicle for SC4 is a desktop unless you are walking around with it for some reason.

Hello Nonny Moose,

I play for several years, my cities used to crash due to bad management by me :) too many dependancies back then and too many plugins, I lost it(and my cities) more then once.

Now, 2011, I have a city, 400K and surrounding maps, I carefully watch for which custom buildings I implent, one by one. So far so good.

Suddenly SC4 crashes/pops at the same time in my 400K city, no error, no freeze, just desktop within 1 second , other maps within this region no problem. I have many BSC files and CSX and Simgoober, dependancies needed but no boxes in the game, is that it ? Reinstall doesnt work, running 1 CPU neither.

If I send you my ecxeption report, could you please help me ? :???:

TerrorNL

no, it means music from Holland, no real terror

I don't know if we can find anything out from the exception report, but we only need the first 20 lines. The core dump is useless as we have neither the debug tables, the load map, nor the source.

Also, what is different about your playing environment? Did you get a new machine? Update your operating system? Any such information would be useful.

This is the usual crash. Often caused by overloading the command queue. If you scroll with the wheel too fast, or pan the screen too fast or in frequent bursts this may happen. There are other bugs that will do this.

Standard Deluxe updated to EP1. (no bat nightlights). Just fine. Vista (6.0) is not the best O/S. Consider going to W7.

3GB of RAM. Your directx test shows ample virtual memory as well.

What is the circumstance of the crash? Was the game running a long time? You are running on a laptop, and they sometimes overheat and kill programs that are running the processor flat out, which SC4 does. Was the case hot?

Unfortunately the run away from desktop machines has caused some problems with overheats. This could be one, but it may just be one of the many bugs. If you are running in cheetah mode with a fairly large city, try a lower speed. I've been investigating the crashes for about six months now, and without access to the code cannot determine with any certainty what happens. There is a well documented problem with puzzle pieces, but this does not seem to be it.

Twitching your fingers on the mouse wheel causing random zooms can do it. It seems to overflow the command queue. Try using the numeric keys 1 through 6 to zoom or scroll slowly with the mouse. Trying to force the program to do things quickly by waving the mouse around can be fatal. I don't know that you do this, but please don't.

Beyond all of this, do in-game saves after you have accomplished something you don't want to do over. And if you are using puzzle pieces do it with the highest magnification and save (CRL+s) often.

I have a Dell XPS 720 Desktop, no laptop.

SC4 used to crash alot past few weeks, saving a lot helped. But now it crashes after 3 seconds when I load the map. I raised my virtual memory, same.I play at slow speed.

Tried zooming in or out or run the game fast.(Normally I play at 2 zoom levels, i will use the numeric keys from now on). Within 3 seconds back to desktop. No heat, just turned on my pc.

"If you scroll with the wheel too fast, or pan the screen too fast or in frequent bursts this may happen. There are other bugs that will do this."

Yes i use my right mouse button to scroll fast and in frequent bursts yes, followed by zooming in and out after "freshing up"this area, then i hit the "fast" button to see what happens.

Shortly said: im doomed again because there is only 1 savegame which crashes ? :(

Hope you can help me otherwise ill work on another area, again waste of time, all this building :(

1. Slow down. This old legacy program can't handle all that twitching. This is not a race, it is a leisure time activity.

2. If that save is bad, there is nothing that can be done.

3. To avoid corrupting a save do not change focus (switch to another process) during the save but hang in until it finishes, even if you are exiting the game. For some reason, the game cannot stand to lose focus when it is doing anything having to do with the disks.

4. Think about considering the whole region as a single city with districts or wards, and build accordingly.

5. Neither Rome nor any Sim-city can be built in a day. It may take a couple of Sim-centuries of careful, gradual building.

One of the big problems if you are simulating Netherlands cities is how do you handle the polders, eh? The program isn't much in favor of land below sea level.

I am sorry we couldn't sort this out for you.

If you really want to be able to have several things going at once, you could consider an operating system with multiple desk tops. For example, the UBUNTU decor of Linux has as many desk tops as you like, and you can switch between them without the application(s) in one of them being aware that you have done so.

You can download this, make a live disk and test it without any effect on your system as it will run totally in memory for testing. It will quite happily dual boot with any other system, and provides the GRand Unified Boot loaded (GRUB) for you to choose which system shall be loaded.

I am currently running with four desk tops.

Hello there guys. I've been having crash issues lately. I'll run you through the scenario.

When I want to play SC4, I start up the game, and after it loads, the "EA Games" logo in the animation freezes about half-way, then returns me to my desktop. Here's a picture:

IMG_5312.jpg

I apologize for the bad shot, Ctrl+PrintScreen didn't work.

This issue happened back on May 21st or 25th and persisted for several days straight. I went to the point of restarting my computer, reinstalling the game, and almost to the point of re-partitioning an old hard drive (that has Vista on it) and installing XP as the main operating system. Then, as I said before, several days later, the game starts up and plays without crashing.

So, today, I wanted to play SC4 (as it's been a couple months), and the same issue comes up. Today, and even back in May, I looked online to see if anyone had the same or a similar problem that I have had; I was unable to find any similar symptom. So, I've come back to Simtropolis to see if there is a resolution, or if anyone has had this problem before and their remedy. Here's the exception report, as well as the DirectX Diagnostic dialog box.

I appreciate the help and if there is anything else needed to resolve this problem, let me know. Thanks.

By the way, I have a quick question. Do Mac users with SC4 have this many problems compared to the PC user's version?

Well, for openers, you are missing the EA published patches that are required bug fixes. I am not surprised that you have strange things happening.

You should go to SC4Devotion and click the EA support in the left hand frame to find the appropriate version of EP1 for your game. You seem to have the north American edition (1,1,610), so the first one will be right. This will bring you up to build 1,1,638. Then if you have any BAT-created plugins, you will also need the BATupdate to bring you to 1,1,640. Registration at the other site is free.

If you like, you can get rid of the EA introduction by adding the option -intro:off to your command line in the short cut. Note that this and any other options are like words in a sentence and need one space before them.

So, install the fixes, and let us know how you did, please.

I remember downloading a patch off of the Maxis website, but I did download the patch from SC4D anyway. However, the problem still lingered, so I backed up my plugins and regions and reinstalled the game. Now, it works. Thank you for your help though A Nonny Moose, at least there are some people out there who help fellow gamers!
