June 13th is a sad day for aviation enthusiasts and WWII buffs alike, the B-17 named Liberty Belle makes a forced landing in a field in Illinois but fire units are too late to put out the fires on the plane. It is unlikely she will fly again: b17-bomber-liberty-belle.jpg

I saw that. No one seemed quite sure who was flying it or why. Have they figured out anything about that?

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Not yet, but they say the plane landed undamaged but it was burning. The fire department attempted to get to it before any more damage was done but they couldn't cross the field. By the time they were able to put out the fires, about half of the bomber already burned.

It is too bad. The news report I saw said something about an air show. Keeping these old crates flying is a work of love and high art.

I think there is one Hurricane and two or three Spitfires still flying. I don't know if there are any P-38's but there were a great many more of them. I think there may be one or two Lancaster Bombers still capable of flight, but they are probably stashed in museums. I believe all the Beaufighters were used up in the war.

The RAF Memorial flight is still flying regularly (a Hurrican, Spitfire and a Lancaster). Also I saw another Spitfire flying two Saturdays ago.

They did not have a B17 or P38 the did have A Corsair flying which are my favorites.
