I just stumbled over Terraria recently and got hooked.

It's basically the same concept as Minecraft, building with blocks, but 2D only (think of platform like Super Mario) AND much more on the gameplay side of life, mixing the building/crafting scheme of Minecraft with some RPG elements. character creation, day/night circle with respective monsters, big bosses, a great set of different tools/armors/weapons, some magic, dungeons, events and so on and so forth...

And effin huge maps. 3 differnt sizes of randomly generated maps, the biggest at 8400x2400px, while 1px equals one block ingame.

And it's of course single and multiplayer while you can also host multiplayer games on your singleplayer map.

it's current version is 1.0.4 and it's available for low budget on steam (it's 9,99 €/$) and if you'd ask me, you get a decent game for that prize, definitely for those who tried minecraft and missed something

My friend has it. I might buy it, but haven't. The NPC's are interesting, as is the endless number of items you can get. My favorite part was how water actually flows and has volume.

I can pretty much second that. and with further advancement in updates it's gonna get even better in terms of available content. since thers not much to bugfix in such a game a lotta focus is put on the content. can't wait for the next pushes

Hardcore mode is.. hardcore. Gave up playing on hardcore after my char fell to his death in one of those chasms.

yeah it's quite a pain, tried it, won't use it further.

Just don't like this. same with minecraft when you die. always a mess to find where you died and collect your equipment again.

The only thing you lose is money, if there is any in your coin slots, the easy way to remedy this is to put them in your actual inventory if you feel vulnerable, and you lose nothing.

only in normal mode, in hardcore, you lose everything, just like in minecraft.

Server mods always are huge fun :P

wow that drops a lotta coins

Been playing it on and off. Not extremely addicted to it. (yet at least)I recently got a gold sword and so far the furthest Down I've gotten was the lower stone layer and found some giant mushrooms. :golly:

make yourself a glowing mushroom farm further up (but still below ground level 0ft, build a depth meter if necessary). they need a little time to grow but make some nice health boosts... and bucks at the merchant.

It looks interesting but I think I won't buy it.

So I just stumbled over that one guy who does amazing things in Terraria:

Dunno how he did it to this detail and how much time he spent, but thats fracking awesome work.

Got me curious and I spent some time cross-reading the state of the art of Terraria, looks like 1.0.6. is close to a release and has a hell of a lot of decent changes, amongst them:

    1. New Items such as new weapons, new equipments, new chests (lockable yeah)
    2. Interface Overhaul such as new slot for ammo, indication of remaining ammo, lockable action tab, color changes
    3. Changes to the recuperation; potions heal less (as of now a max. of 5 hearts per minute) but you automatically heal yourself slowly outside battles (as in most other RPGs), mana regenerates depending on the amount of mana left (less mana = slower regeneration)
    4. New Buffs / Debuffs; certain equipments eg increase recuperation rates. Debuffs like diseases will come
    5. New Damage System. Not just are the different types of damage now, but all attacks have a range of damage they can deal simulating a good/poor hit, plus you have the chance to hit critical which as of now will double the damage dealt
    6. Increased difficulty, especially the bosses are harder now; on the bottom line the difficulty is said to be at 150% of the difficulty of 1.0.5
    7. More RPG-like gameplay, especially a move closer to what other RPGs offer with their different classes (eg archer, mage, swordsman,...)
    8. Dungeons take more time to explore now as you gotta find keys to open doors, chests and the likes
    9. of course lotta bugfixes and tweaks

as this is a lot of stuff and really basic changes to the gameplay, folks suggested to call this update v1.1 but the devs refused as they want to keep this name for a future update with a main focus on content (think of it as expansions for classic RPGs like WOW).

None the less, this sidenote and the fact that there's dramatic changes to the gameplay with the upcoming 1.0.6 (which seems close to release if you'd ask me) give me a strong feeling that said update 1.1 will be the next thing after 1.0.6 to be released.

Either way, I am really looking forward to these changes. What about you?

This looks even more retro than Minecraft.

Watching videos of the game and seeing the new stuff in the Dec 1 update has convinced me to buy the game. Too bad I didn't get it while it was on sale for $5.

now as development of Terraria has been canceled quite a while ago to start working on Starbound, there's still news about Terraria:

505 games will release Terraria on PSN and XBL in early 2013
