I downloaded and installed SC4 Mapper.

Suggestions?

What system OS you using? Mapper doesn't work on Vista and Windows 7 without using a complicated work around.

Richard

Ok I ditched the map I was going to use because the SC4Mapper program does not work at all on a Vista or Win 7 machine ( I am on Win 7).

I chose a different map which just had a config file and a greyscale image which did not require anything as far as programs to load the map.

My question now is...Can the grid that determines the city sizes be modified?

We were typing at same time. Thanks for the response. Any idea about the grid?

If you mean can the config file be changed so that the cities are in a different layout, then yes, it can be. If you open the config file in a graphics program (MS Paint works fine) and change the pixel configuration, you can change the layout. Just remember the pattern required by the game: a single red pixel for small cities, a 2x2 green pixel square for medium, and a 4x4 blue square for large. The city sizes are limited to those three by the game, so other sizes are not possible.

Also, if you do this after the map has been rendered and/or developed, then all terrain will come out flat in any cities that have been rendered, and any development will be destroyed. In this case the map will need to be rendered again to get the terrain back.

OOOH so that is interesting in multiple respects. Firstly so the config file is just like a color coded block puzzle for kidies then lol ok.

secondly, I am not sure why my map looks like it has mountain ranges on it anyway...flattening it might actually be exactly what I want. Jacksonville is damn near completely flat just above sea level anyway.

One way to look at it... :ohyes:

I realize I didn't make myself clear enough. By terrain being flattened, it will also remove any water features. It will come out as a flat green tile, like the ones you see before rendering a map in the game. Removing mountains and making other terain alterations will require the use of the game's terrain tools. Just wanted to clarify that...

Hmmm OK yeah glad you clarified hehe.

Although my analogy is nowhere near right about the kidblocks either. My config file does not look anything like I expected it to based on the grid layout in game. I am not sure at all how the corelation works.

Perhaps I'm not understanding correctly... If you open the config file, you should see a pattern of red, green, and blue squares (depending on the config file you may not see all of the colors). The red represents a small city in the game. The green will be a medium one, and the blue will be a large city. What download are you trying?

Yeah I see it now...I am not sure why it looked odd to me at first...guess I really did not pay too much attention to the layout in game. Curious why it is so tiny though. At 800% zoom I can still barely see it lol.

Now comes the fun of trying to guess where the grid will lay on the image.

Yes, they'll be rather smallish, especially if the region isn't that big. And maybe adjust the screen resolution..? Mine usually come out around an inch on a side.

Don't know if your interested in another program, but there is Landscape Designer that can be used to lay the grayscale over the config. And with a litle playing around, can alternate between the two. And I don't know if it works on newer operating systems - haven't heard one way or another. Just a thought...

@CaptCity - Landscape Generator works fine on Windows 7

    Regards,

    Richard

It works well enough on Linux under wine, but the config.bmp builder doesn't, nor the cities database because of some funny problem with OLE simulation, but it is fine to generate maps. You just need a different paint program. I use MTpaint because it has a 2000% zoom.

I have a XP machine that I build my maps on, can I then download them into my Win7 machine and use them in the game.

Sorry I have been gone awhile and I am resetting up my systems. My health has turned around and I am doing good and want to build maps again. I miss it

Thanks to DrunkApple I was able to get SC4Mapper working on my Win 7 PC...simple as changing a folder name.

However, now I am getting an error when I try to load the map I chose. It says it may be too big for my RAM. Really? 4 gigs of RAM isn't enough?

    Anyone have any suggestions here?

I am having issues with the mapper. I have downloaded a map, and tried to use sc4mapper to get it into the game. Every single blimmin time, it crashes. I have closed all my programmes, and have ended all processes that use up any memory, not including the system. But still, every single time, without fail, it still crashes. Comes up with the "send error report" thing. I don't even move the mouse. Can somebody please help me? This is really starting to get on my nerves.

I have not gotten an answer on my last question here. Is it normal to have SC4Mapper tell you that you don't have enough RAM to load a map found on the STEX?

I have 4 gigs of RAM.

OK scratch this...I deleted all my map stuff and started over following directions very carefully and somehow it was different cause it worked. Go figure.
