This is probably a common question, so I apologise but do all BAT's and ST Exchange's work in the original version of the game as I just downloaded one and got a big box instead of the ploppable.

Most of the STEX items require SC4 Rush Hour or Deluxe Edition installed. It would be best to buy the Rush Hour expansion as it adds many new things to the game such as the avenue network and new mass transit options. It is also strongly recommended to update the game with the official updates as some plugins require them to function and most night-lighted buildings require the BAT update to light up at night. Have a look through the pinned topics HERE to update the game.

Very few STEX uploads work on the standard SC4. The only one I'd advise you to look at are the veru early uploads around 2005 or earlier as after that Rush Hour and Deluxe became standard. Your really going to struggle getting good quality custom content for the standard SC4. I'd strongly advise advise you to get Rush Hour is you want to get the full amount of enjoyment out of the game.

Regards,

Richard

Just to add, even with Deluxe/Rush Hour you may still get brown boxes with downloads from the STEX....this is because some downloads also require Dependancies for them to show properly in the game.

Also, to save me starting a new thread I'll ask a quick question myself...

Unfortunately, my PC decided to die on me the other day so I have had to do a full system recovery - meaning I lost ALL my plugins and have had to start all over again (grrrr). I am just going to download a few essentials (NAM/Garbage Chute/asphalt texture/highway walls and a transportation skin). I am not going to bother with downloading loads of plugins incase this happens again before I purchase a new PC.

So, to my question....I seem to remember that there was a patch out for Sim City 4, I have the deluxe edition...do I need to find/download the patch or can I just continue?

Thanks in advance

If your version is 1.1.638.0 - Yes you need the update to see / use all the 'goodies'

If you just purchased the game online and downloaded from Steam or EA Games your SimCity 4.exe should be version 1.1.641.0 and does NOT need the Official update for the Rush Hour / Deluxe.

Happy Gaming - Don't forget to back up your files!

@TFM1874: That is really too bad. Check your version number, and if it is less than 640 you need the relevant updates, probably Both EP1 and the BATupdate, together with the lot editor from the BAT page. If you don't BAT, you don't need other stuff from the home site.

I guess you now see the wisdom of keeping a backup off-line. What you have to remember is how small the media are:

A CD only holds 700MB, and a DVD 4.7GB. I suggest you make an investment of about $150 when you get a chance and get yourself a free standing 1TB HDD. On this kind of disk, you can back up your whole machine, especially if you compress the stuff you are saving. I suggest your use a standard file compressor and not one of the specialized backup programs which have a habit of being incompatible with each other. If you use either .zip or .rar format, you should be able to unpack that easily.

I really do have sympathy with you. I recently had a failure in my system (caused by fumble fingering) that wiped out my partition table on my main disk. Fortunately, I had a backup of all my user files, and had only to format the drive, restore my operating systems (two of them) then pull in my files from the other disk. I just replaced one of my off-line disks with a new 1 TB drive made by Samsung. The old Seagate disk died of old age at about 15 years. I guess disks are like dogs, they don't live forever. I have two off-line disks, each with two partitions. On of them has a bootable copy of my production O/S on it on one partition, and a set of archives on the other. I just got the second disk this week and it will soon have the same arrangement. This may seem paranoid, but in the last month I have had one of my backups die, and my main hard disk skragged, and I am still OK.

That has the advantage of having all the Maxis patches already installed.
