With new technologies for ear-mounted cell-phone sets, is it possible that one could be trained to sub-vocalize speech and have it detected by the cell set? Does anyone know of any thechnology and or training work being done on this?

Putting aside for a second how incredibly creepy the idea of having a machine that can read your thoughts is... I don't see how such a thing could practically work. How would it tell what you want to say from your other thoughts? There'd be no way to filter.

I think Sub Vocalization is not nessasrralry reading your thoughts.

think of the spy movies were they have the implanted com unit,I think they called it a dentiphone?

were you can hear your base and are trained to subvocalaize so its only picked up by the device and no one else can hear it.

It's like inner speech or what you do when you read; how you can hear yourself talk but you're not articulating the words.

If I recall correctly, there is such technology being experimented with by NASA. However, at this stage it requires a set of electrodes to be attached to the throat near the larynx in order to measure the vibrations. But I have a couple questions regarding the feasibility. I'm really not sure how the electrodes are supposed to convert vibrations into specific words considering the mouth doesn't have to move. Also, the voiceless consonants /p/ /t/ /k/ /ʧ/ /f/ /θ/ /s/ /ʃ/ /h/ do not cause the vocal folds to vibrate. Again, during a whisper the vocal folds do not vibrate, so why would they vibrate during subvocalization? I'm not sure what exactly the electrodes are recording if there's an extreme lack of vocal fold vibration during subvocalization.

First of all, there is no brain wave stuff or telepathy involved. It is just a matter of "almost" talking. Selles is right, there are real problems with tongue expressed sounds that do not involve the vocal chords. A system that depended on sensing the larynx has some insurmountable problems with languages that use aspirate sounds. Also, implanting electrodes is out!

This thread was brought up because of a commercial I saw in which a rather pretty girl was talking out loud near a young feller who thought she was talking to him because her hair covered the headset. I thought is was an object lesson in privacy failure, so I started this up. If you are going to talk on a cell phone, people need to know it is the phone your are talking to or they need to have someway to be almost silent (inaudible). There is a similar commercial with an LOL speaking to some one while walking down the street, which gets her hard looks from the beat cop.

If people are going to do this kind of thing, they would be well to think about what people around them might think, and to think about their own privacy.

Earlier on, some people have expressed the idea of an actually implanted cell phone chip. This issue falls in that bailiwick, too.

I looked up sub-vocal before I posted anything, I was being sort of serious about the TV mute thing; I think it is a nasal sound when reading, or thinking which ever way.

Not sure if I should remove "sort of ".

I would be weary of any sort of implant, the whole devils sign thing.

I think you should replace your tongue firmly in your mouth and out of your cheek and say that again.
