Splitting Off Topic

One of the reasons I hate General Off Topic is the less-savory and bitter arguments in there. I mean, I realize this is a PG-13 site, but I think that there should be two forums of Off-Topic.

One site I went to had "Off Topic" and "Way Off Topic". Way Off Topic was where the arguments "For discussion of controversial topics. Sex. Politics. Morality. Things like that. "

Some suggestions on what to populate the WOT thread would include some of the super-threads, including American Politics, Simtropolis Closet Thread, etc.

GOT would have non-inflammatory topics and general interest. Moose Factory. TV. Shortages of canned beef. Things like that.

What do you say? It would require some moving things around, but I think it would just fine! 29.gif

The Closet Thread has an amazing tendency to not descend into flame war, and keeps a solid PG-13 rating or better at all times. I guess fireproofing the feather boas was a good investment. As for American Politics, it is already in Current Events, which as Duke said, covers the more controversial things. This is one of the more polite sites on the internet, and I see no reason to split Off Topic to prevent something that happens only very rarely here and is usually swiftly dealt with.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I have plans for Current Events too. Current Events should only go for main news-worthy articles and timely discussions, not general politics-y type stuff, like talking about the healthcare system as it stands and how it can be improved (or ruined).

Maybe I'm just influenced as such because ST 7 uses the same board style of another forum I visit.

...and that is the way we like it.

If other forums allow discussions that are essentially ill informed and highly opinionated flame fests, where trolls are given free reign to rant about whatever they like to whomever they like, then those who wish to participate in those types of discussions can go there.

However those type of discussions will not be happening here on Simtropolis.

    Amen.

I don't think the Current Events forum is at all limited to just politics. It could be anything. Anything current and an event.

The Off Topic is generally just an off topic board. Posts don't tend to last very long if they're way off topic and uninteresting to the members here.

I will give you this much: the name "Current Events" is perhaps a tad misleading, as that forum is also used for political, religious, and philosophical discussions not necessarily related to any particular "current event" per se. Another site I used to hang out at (which no longer exists) called their equivalent forum "Debate and Controversy" - but it wasn't used to discuss ordinary, non-controversial news, so the name made sense.

It'd be tempting to want to split the two, but it's difficult to really do that as items in the news often tie into underlying hot debates. And I can't think of a better name, can you?
